Description:
This subseries documents Frampton’s academic career as an Associate professor at the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Princeton University (1967-1972) and as Associate professor and subsequently as Ware professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), Columbia University (1972-1977; 1974- present). While at GSAPP, Frampton simultaneously held appointments as Visiting professor at several institutions. These activities are also documented here including documents related to his appointment as Visiting professor at the Berlage Institute, Amsterdam (1990-1997), the Università della Svizzera Italiana, Mendrisio (1998-2003), and École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, Switerland (1995). This subseries is made up of textual documentation consisting of course readers, application booklets, university handbooks, correspondence, student works, course syllabi, drafts of slides for lectures, draft lectures and notes, drafts for graduation speeches, take home exams, transcripts of lectures, event posters, and various photographs of student projects/models.

Description:
The portfolio 'Oeuvre de C. Rohault de Fleury', published in 1884 (DR1974:0002:029), is introduced by a succinct 'Notice Biographique', the author of which remains unknown. It provides valuable information on his family background and a narrative description of his major works (including unexecuted projects), illustrated by the accompanying unbound prints. The commentary is particulary informative concerning Charles Rohault de Fleury's work at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle, the 1859 opera house project for the Théâtre Imperiale de l'Opera, and his innovative use of iron (reinforced) floors and roof trusses in both his public and domestic projects. Another copy of this portfolio is located in the CCA library. Album DR1974:0002:026:001-038 (1854-1858) contains drawings of architectural ornament by Charles and/or Georges Rohault de Fleury. Some of the drawing are possibly studies of ornament for Charles' architectural projects of the 1850's such as Hôtel Soltykoff, although others appear to be typical student drawings of classical architecture and ornament executed by Georges. Included are twelve drawings of architectural ornament and sculpture submitted by Georges to a newly introduced 'dessin' Prix d'emulation at the École des beaux-arts (see series CI001.S1: Architetural Education).

Few of the sources of these drawings are clearly identified, with the exception of Genie de la Liberté from the Colonne de Juillet (DR1974:0002:031:016:003). There are a number of drawings of sculpture from the 16th century tomb monument of Maximillian I in Innsbruck (DR1974:0002:031:017 - DR1974:0002:031:023:001-003). -- Portfolio Architecture Antique Mélanges comprises mostly architectural drawings from buildings or monuments in Pisa, Rome, Tivoli, Naples, Florence, Viterbo, and Nice. The CCA's Rohault de Fleury collection includes two of Georges' historical and archeological studies of medieval Italian architecture: 'Les Monuments de Pise au Moyen', 1866 (DR1974:028:001:066) and 'La Toscane au Moyen Age Lettres sur L' Architecture Civile et Militaire en 1400' 2 vols.,1874 (DR1974:0002:039 and DR1974:0002:040). 'Monuments de Pise au Moyen Age' is an atlas consisting solely of 66 prints of Pisan architecture, sculpture, and painting. The section on architecture is the largest, and is divided into three sections for the Lombard, Roman, and Gothic periods. The accompanying text, and an identical atlas of prints, is located in the CCA library. 'La Toscane au Moyen Age Lettres...' is a history of Tuscan civil and military architecture to 1400. The text is in the form of a fictitious correspondence between Raimond du Temple, a famous architect of the Louvre under Charles V, and his son Charles who is traveling through Tuscany. The text is accompanied by photomechanical illustrations, mostly sketches of scenes from bas-reliefs and manuscripts, and a few of built structures. The CCA library has two sets of a related publication entitled 'La Toscane au Moyen Age architecture civile et militaire' 2 vols. These earlier and larger publications are probably the source for some of the text and plates of 'La Toscane au Moyen Age Lettres...'. The introductory remarks, to 'La Toscane au Moyen Age Lettres..' and to the text (CCA library) of the 'Monuments de Pise au Moyen Age' are particularly informative as they provide an insight into Georges Rohault de Fleury's interpretation of historical periods of artistic renewal, decline, and decadence, and their didactic relationship to contemporary architectural and religious concerns.
