Rohault de Fleury collection

Synopsis:
The Rohault de Fleury collection documents the work of three generations of French architects, Hubert, his son Charles, and his grandson Georges, spanning from the early 18th to late 19th century. The collection is extremely varied encompassing both private and government commissions and including domestic work, institutional buildings, commercial buildings, urban planning, and student work from both the École des beaux-arts and the École polytechnique, and archaeological studies. Stylistically, the projects incorporate the two dominant contemporary directions in French architecture - functionalism as advocated by Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand and the classicism of the École des beaux-arts.

File documents an executed project for a bookshop for the Biennale di Venezia, in Venice, Italy. The scheme, located in the Giardini di Castello, was designed by the office of James Stirling, Michael Wilford Associates in association with the architect Thomas Muirhead, and the firm Building Project. Material in this file was produced between 1989 and 1993. File contains some early conceptual drawings, and several design development and presentation drawings. Photographic materials include views of Italian vernacular architecture by architect Norbert Heyers, views of the completed building by photographer Dida Biggi and of the presentation model by John Donat Photography. Unlike Kenneth Frampton’s research files which are arranged in Series AP197.S2, these files were compiled for book projects, articles, book reviews, lectures, interviews, conference addresses, and keynote speeches, and document over 300 of Frampton's published or unpublished texts. The materials include notes, contracts, drafts, correspondence, final copies of texts, photographic materials, and research materials. This subseries also includes Frampton’s curriculum vitaes, notebooks, and covers he designed for the journal Architectural Design (1962-1964). The files are organized alphabetically by the topic explored, namely architects. Some of these architects include: Alvar Aalto; Tadao Ando; Georges Baines; Luis Barragan; H.P. Berlage; Mario Botta; Alberto Campo Baeza; David Chipperfield; Alvaro Siza; Michael Kagan; Louis Kahn; Rem Koolhaas; Kengo Kuma; Kisho Kurakawa; Adolf Loos; Le Corbusier; Raphael Moneo; Carlo Scarpa; O.M.
