This project file documents an unbuilt design by Testa & Weiser for Carbon Tower (2001), a forty-storey building made almost entirely of carbon fibre. The project was developed in parallel with scripting software designed while Peter Testa and Devyn Weiser co-directed the Emergent Design Group at MIT. "The tower consists of an interdependent set of parts: floor plates hang from a diagrid structure of bundled fibres reinforced by two double-helix covered ramps, which are run in and out of the structure and are themselves made of strands woven at a finer scale. A thin composite skin—glass would be too heavy—wraps the tower’s parts together. A collaboration with Arup in 2002 allowed Testa & Weiser to simplify the scheme even further, by moving all core elements, from elevators to structural supports, to the tower’s perimeter. To take full advantage of the flexibility and energy efficiency of composite materials, Testa & Weiser also imagined that the carbon fibre structures would be formed on site through a process called pultrusion."[1] The file contains a large number of digital files documenting the conceptual and design development of the project; consultation with Arup Consulting Engineers, New York; research on composite materials; fabrication of 3D printed physical models by 3D Systems and Windform; and exhibition of the project at several museums and galleries, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, New York. The office assigned the date 1989-1992 for this project. The project was located on the Paseo Maritimo in the center of the Olympic village of Barcelona. It was built for the meteorologists for the Olympic games. It was also used by the reporters of the Barcelona summer Olympic games of 1992. The six-story building was 33 metres in diameter and 4,000 square meters. The building had a cylindrical shape made of reinforced concrete. Series 2, I’ve heard about and Hypnosis chamber, 2004-2006, relates to the conception of the urban structure “I’ve heard about”. The records contain algorithmically-generated images, renderings, pictures of models and exhibitions. There are also photographs of the contour crafting process, 3D models and animated renderings illustrating the construction process of the structure. The project is a conceptual, unbuilt project that is meant to be a habitable organism, an adaptive landscape in a constant state of evolution. By means of transitory scenarios in which the operational mode is entropy and uncertainty, it develops open algorithms based on growth scripts permeable not only to human expressions, but also to the most discrete data such as the chemical emissions (for example due to stress or anxiety) of those who inhabit it. The chemical information is harvested through nanoreceptors feeding the VIAB machine with information. This biostructure becomes the visible part of human contingencies and their negotiation in real time. The structure is conceptualized to be in constant construction through the VIAB machine which is also a constituent of the structure itself. It secretes fiber cement, shaping the landscape where it is located and through which it moves. It generates the reticular structure using a process modelled on contour crafting. The VIAB machine was developed with Robotics Research Lab of the University of Southern California and takes its name from the terms viability and variability. R&Sie(n) considers that due to its mode of emergence “I’ve heard about” fabrication is not subjugated to any political power. Hypnosis chamber is a component of “I’ve heard about”. It consists of an indoor chamber, which was realized as a full-scale sample constructed through automated machinery. The chamber is situated as a part of the whole urban structure presented by “I’ve heard about,” and its goal is to immerse the audience into the project, into a fictional environment only reachable by hypnosis. In this context, hypnosis is a way to help citizens escape from their social condition and experience the new condition of citizenship imagined in “I’ve heard about”, where democracy is re-evaluated as a process of self-determination. Both parts of the projects were shown in contemporary art museums. First at Musée d’art de la ville de Paris in Paris (2005), the Hypnotic chamber is permanently on view at Towada Art Center in Towanda, Japan. AP193.S4 contains a video orienting the project into François Roche theoretical stance, research as speculation, that can be summarize as the use of technological tools to take a critical and political position through esthetic in order to open new lines of thoughts. There were two competition finalists: Abalos & Herreros received the second phase of the project which was not realised. The firm identified this project as number 197. "The project approaches the two presented problems in a single way: the image change of the existing complex and the extension of the floor area at the roof top. […] [A] single type of curtain wall has been developed with windows of reasonable shape and format which curve at the top floor to take advantage of the maximum volume allowed by local building laws, generating an image of the building which is completely different than the actual one. The use of silk printed glass in the whole building, with motives from plants, creates an impression from the interior to be situated in a garden. At the same time the exterior appearance underlines the building’s singularity at the pedestrian level. […] The created extension of the building has a trae [sic] singular shape which one day could host a possible showroom or multifunctional rooms or as executive floor.” (ARCH270975) Abalos & Herreros worked with Blaise Sahy. The aim was to increase the efficiency of production and improve labour relations by producing enclosures, equipment, material, and information systems that would improve safety, on-site communication, and job satisfaction. Cedric Price's office produced 2 report volumes, a Portable Enclosures Programme (PEP) and used at least one construction site, at Angel Court, as a test site for the proposals. Diagrams and flow charts show preliminary planning and programming design decisions and show the relationship between present and future factors. A flow chart illustrates the scope of the program. Charts and diagrams map the relative time scale of parts of the programme over various development phases. An axonometric and cutaway drawing show the interior construction of a pedestrian walkway. Data showing both the projected and real results of a site test application of McAppy planning and equipment from 1974 to 1975 was collected and presented as a broadside.
