Summary:
A publication based on "Pandemic objects", an editorial project that compiles and reflects on objects that have taken on new meaning and purpose during the Covid-19 pandemic. During times of pandemic, a host of everyday often-overlooked "objects" are suddenly charged with new urgency. Toilet paper becomes a symbol of public panic, a forehead thermometer a tool for social control, convention centres become hospitals, while parks become contested public commodities. By compiling these objects and reflecting on their changing purpose and meaning, the project aims to paint a unique picture of the pandemic and the pivotal role objects play within it.

Summary:
This publication explores the contested territory between the state and corporate drive to 'securitise' urban space – and the principle of the city as a site for enacting open civil society, participatory democracy, and the freedom of speech and assembly. Starting from the disputed redevelopment of the Oslo Government Quarter since its attack in 2011, the book functions as a broader discursive platform mediating opposing positions at the intersection of architecture/urbanism and security/democracy. The book interposes essays, interviews, site drawings, a lexicon of terms, and photo-essays documenting fieldwork in the UK, USA, Israel, Palestine and Spain.

Sam Thorne’s School: A Recent History of Self-Organized Art Education is a chronicle of self-organized art schools and artist-run education platforms that have emerged since 2000. Comprising a series of twenty conversations conducted by Thorne with the artists, curators, and educators behind these schools, the book maps a territory at once fertile and contested. Spanning projects in London, Lagos, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Ramallah, Berlin, and Saint Petersburg, among other locations, these critical dialogues respond to spiraling student debt, the MFA system, and the “pedagogical turn,” while offering proposals for the future of art education.

This original collection examines how architectural ideas, social models and building forms circulate round the world and become mediated and adapted to local conditions. What are the films of Sidney Lumet, Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, and Spike Lee without New York? Cinema and Landscape frames contemporary film landscapes across the world, in an exploration of screen aesthetics and national ideology, film form and cultural geography, cinematic representation and the human environment. This volume both extends the existing field of film studies and stakes claims to overlapping, contested territories in the humanities and social sciences.

Summary:
Political conflicts, humanitarian disasters, wars and migrations – we live in an age of global unrest and discontinuity. While official reactions consist in the search for means of stabilization and restraint, the dynamics of deregulation are giving rise to a situation characterized by global parallel systems: parallel architectures, parallel societies, parallel lives. This book offers an insight into the complex spatial and social realities of globalization, from city-like informal markets in Moscow and the post-war self-urbanization in Kosovo to the border economies of the Mediterranean and the parallel worlds of today’s burgeoning megacities. In this state of uncertainties, networks have become the most powerful tool in how we organize our lives. The emerging struggle between network formations produces a space that is both fragmented and contested, yet testifies to the creativity of its inhabitants. As a result, our cities have become topologies of overlapping realities and narratives as much as they are geographical entities. Networked Cultures traces these conflictual negotiations in dialogue with artists, architects, curators and theorists whose work explores possibilities for a multi-inhabitation of territories and narratives across cultural, social or geographic boundaries. Their shared knowledge and accompanying case studies provide stirring insights as well as imaginative encounters with a world of networks – our world. The enclosed DVD features conversations with the contributors to this book that follow the thematic strands along which the collaborative format of Networked Cultures has evolved: Network Creativity – Contested Spaces – Trading Places – Parallel Worlds.
