Summary:

Summary:

Summary:
This design studio dictionary presents architectural terms with special emphasis on using these terms to generate design ideas. It highlights the architectural thinking behind the terminology and helps readers gain a thorough understanding of space and form. Featuring double-page spreads with over 190 illustrated entries, the book explores, analyzes, and cross-references key elements and techniques used in architecture and interior design. Each entry first defines the common meaning of the term, then goes on to discuss in detail its generative possibilities. Scenarios involving the use of a design principle, or the way it might be experienced, further aid students in developing strategies for their own design.

Why is architecture so remote from labor struggles, with poorly negotiated labor contracts and barely any self-management models? What possibilities emerge when we acknowledge the glaring class divide between the architectural firm and the construction site? What insights do the stories of workers provide about the construction industry? How do different design practices emerge if designers and construction workers unite? On ''Architecture and Work'' is a collection of essays on the relationship between construction, architecture, work, and labor. From complaints over grueling working conditions on construction sites to demands for better benefits in design offices, asking candidly "who can afford to be radical?", this is the third publication in the series ''The Political Economy of Space'', after ''On Architecture and the Greenfield'' (2024) and ''On Architecture and Greenwashing'' (2024).

Summary:
With its reliance on extracted materials and an intense use of resources, the process of construction begs the question whether real sustainability in architecture and planning is possible. For some, a short-term solution is "greenwashing": adopting strategies of simulated commitment instead of investing in actual change toward fewer emissions. NGOs have called out large companies for "low integrity" pledges, pointing out the systemic ecological injustice that the built environment creates through material, wealth and labor extractivism. As institutionalized and commodified greenwashing hollows out the term, how do architects and designers position their work beyond a flattening universalistic understanding of sustainability? The first volume of a forthcoming series, "On architecture and greenwashing" is a collection of essays that presents a cross section of positions on architecture and its political economies, and explores ways to correct course in the face of the climate crisis.
