Description:
This series documents Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto’s design process for the Kansai-kan of the National Diet Library competition in 1996. The variety of formats present in the series relate to the firm’s design process for this project, where manual drawings, physical models and CAD software contributed to one another throughout design iteration. Some digital files were created after the competition. Manual drawings include penciled sketches, detailed inked plans and printed CAD files generally taped on larger mylar sheets. They represent either plans or details of the building’s design. The printed renderings most often present elevations and sections of the buildings. For plans, other printed CAD files were inked back on mylar sheets. Drawings are often annotated and precisely identify the different elements of the library’s program. Digital files represent either elements of the architectural design (conveyors, auditorium, store, etc.) or detailed plans, including topographical lines and 3-D models. They include rendered and scanned images and plans in TIFF, GIF, JPEG, PICT (MacIntosh QuickDraw) and FH5 (Macromedia Freehand) file formats. Most CAD models were created in form*Z, although Microstation DGN files and IGES files created in Alias are also present in the project records. The directory “Kansai Documents” contains a few textual records created with the publishing software QuarkXPress, including labels to be printed and used on physical drawings, correspondence and a text by Jesse Reiser for the Reversible Destiny exhibition catalogue in 1997. Most directories and file names are indicative of the file’s content, clearly referring to building elements, although in some cases files names are non-descriptive. For example, some files use the name of one of the assistants (Yama). File names are sometimes repeated in different directories, including files that are part of AP177.S2.001

Description:
The project series documents "Breathing Architecture," an installation initially presented at the Galleria Federico Luger in Milan, in 2012. The installation consists of a square shaped sheet of plaster placed on a wall giving the impression that a portion of the gallery wall has been lifted to create an opening in order to allow it to breathe. This installation has similarities to Pettena's earlier project "Grass Architecture" for Trigon '72 and "Parete "Branchia"" in 1999. "[...] here the work, which on this occasion takes up the whole of a wall all by itself, has more the significance of a gesture, of a sculpture that retains memories of architecture, and at the same time of the school of conceptual art in which Pettena was also formed." [1] This installation was also later presented at the UMOCA in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2013, and at the exhibition "Architetture Naturali/Gianni Pettena" at the Kunst Meran/Merano Arte, in Meran, in 2017. The project series contains photographs of the first and the second editions of the installation and a drawing. It also contains photographs of the 2017 edition that also shows Pettena's other installation "Paper/Midwestern Ocean" presented in the same exhibition. This series contains papers and drawings related to Goldsmith's career with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill from 1955-83, and also his later work undertaken after retirement from the firm. The documents include office communications and reports, publicity about SOM, extensive client and project files (which include blueprints of Burnham & Root and Holabird & Roche office buildings), and Goldsmith's documentation files on projects, architects, and a wide range of other topics, some of which have a lot of information (bridges, stadium architecture). The drawings of various SOM projects and other work by Goldsmith include some original sketches and design development drawings, as well as five models of bridge proposals. Many of Goldsmith's later bridge designs (often with T.Y. Lin) are well represented, as well as large-scale projects like Central Place Development in Brisbane, Australia (Peddle, Thorpe & Harvey, architects), and the Hangkang City project (Goldsmith with Mahoub Elnimeiri and Alexander Baumgarten, architects).
