Summary:
The Swiss Pavilion at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale exhibits itself and the relations to its immediate surroundings. The exhibition is a conversation over the shared boundary of the pavilions of Switzerland (1952, designed by Bruno Giacometti) and Venezuela (1954, designed by Carlo Scarpa), the only two in the Giardini not fully detached: they share one wall. Artist Karin Sander and art historian Philip Ursprung temporarily open this wall and dismantle the gates from the Swiss Pavilion, thus revealing unanticipated connections between the two neighbors, both distant and close. The complementing book offers a manifesto, a play with the two buildings as dramatis personae, and three brief topical essays. Ten conversations with architectural historian Kurt W. Forster, photographers Paolo Gasparini and Guido Giudi, and Venezuelan architects Elisa Silva and Margarita López-Maya round off this volume.

Summary:
In many countries of Southeast Asia, the middle years of the 20th century marked the dawn of a new era. Independence had been won from colonial powers, and young states such as Burma (Myanmar), Indonesia, Cambodia and Singapore were faced with the task of reconstituting themselves as nations and developing an independent postcolonial identity. Architecture and urban planning played an important role in this process. Local manifestations of modernism emerged that sought to reconcile universal aspirations with specific social conditions. This volume critically examines this architectural and ideological heritage and argues for the preservation and redevelopment of these particular architectures, which are at risk of disappearing amid the rapid urbanization of today.

If it is possible to figure it out and to re-imagine and reimage Rome the way it appears in our mind’s eye when we think of city, then we can make sense of any post-city urban landscape that is our new home in the world.

Covering a wide range of buildings - from national theaters to crematoria, apartment buildings to warehouses, and sanatoria to postal savings banks - Anthony Alofsin proposes a new way of interpreting this language. He calls on viewers to read buildings in two ways: through their formal elements, on the one hand; and through their political, social, and cultural contexts, on the other. By looking through Alofsin’s eyes, readers can see how myriad nations sought to express their autonomy by tapping into the limitless possibilities of art and architectural styles.

Summary:
Andrea Blum (born 1950) is a New York–based artist who has worked at the intersection of art, architecture and design since the 1970s. She has exhibited at a wide range of venues and has built projects in Europe and the United States that include public installations, furniture, exhibition design, libraries and other designs for living. Blum’s work considers the relationship of the sociopolitical world to the private psychological one, zooming in and out of the conditions that organize us as a culture, with a focus on the "down time"—when one eats, reads and is in repose—as the time when the border between private behavior and public etiquette is most evidenced. Accompanying an expansive exhibition of the same name at Hunter College Art Galleries, "Biota" is lavishly illustrated with extensive photography of Blum’s early sculpture, public works, exhibitions, installations and propositions of the past 40 years.

Summary:
In "Architecture and the right to heal," Esra Akcan calls for architecture to take an active role in healing communities affected by socioeconomic, political, and environmental disasters. Akcan frames these processes by discussing buildings and spaces in relation to climate change mitigation and transitional justice. Focusing on lands held by the former Ottoman Empire, Akcan highlights the ongoing struggle to heal after internal social, state, and business-led violence ranging from forced disappearance to mass extinction. Putting forth the concept of resettler nationalism as a source of displacement and partition, she argues that while architecture and urban planning have been weaponized to segregate and subjugate minorities throughout history, they could instead confront systemic violence and make accountability and reparations possible. For Akcan, healing constitutes a matter of rights as well as a holistic notion of justice that addresses the intersections of social, global, and environmental issues and one can be achieved through architecture. By locating spaces of political and ecological harm, Akcan advocates for healing on individual, communal, and planetary levels.

Summary:
Architect and propagandist of the modern movement, Alberto Sartoris (1901-1998) assembled a remarkable photography collection of modern architecture, published in part in two anthologies that have since achieved mythical stature: «Gli elementi dell'architettura funzionale» and «l'Encyclopédie de l'architecture nouvelle». These photographs document the architectural works around the world, from Le Corbusier to Luis Barragàn, photographed by the best specialists of their period. This work presents the collection that Alberto Sartoris donated to the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne. It also throws light on a poorly understood aspect of twentieth century architecture, namely, the mechanisms behind the creation and diffusion of the «image of modern architecture», as well as the determining role played by photography in this process.

Wijdeveld, Cornelis van Eesteren and OMA are also included. Fifteen 'domestic scenes' illustrate important points in the history of housing construction in the Netherlands since 1850.
