Summary:
Carlana Mezzalira Pentimalli designed two important public buildings in the ancient city center of Bressanone, South Tyrol. Just over five hundred meters apart, the two works, the Music School, and the Public Library allowed for reasoning about the city's architecture, exercising a method made up of ideas that look at the peculiarities of places. In a historical period in which the image—by virtue of its visual impact even before its meaning—has taken on the role of the main channel of communication, the Luogo Comune ("common place")—understood both as a meeting space and as the lowest common denominator of an "essential language"—might provide the interval of reflection necessary to start asking some simple, elementary questions about what surrounds us. Within this publishing project, the authors talk about the passage of time, the concept of place and method through the anthropological approach underpinning the photographs taken by Armin Linke in several site visits made in the cities of Treviso, Brixen and Munich, between 2020 and 2021.

Summary:
New Liverpool voit le jour.

Summary:
This volume presents the OFFICE projects through a critical analysis based on archive documents. It also reconstructs the influence of OFFICE’s creative principles among the new generations of architects. The projects appeared in the early 2000s and gained prominence as new forms of digital collage with a cultural engagement. The author traces the evolution of their early ideas developed as paper architecture to the current buildings of a significant scale and presence. The underlying argument of the book demonstrates OFFICE’s ability to preserve in every project the spark of a theoretical construction, which in most cases is carried out according to a rigorous economy of means. Even the new monuments for public institutions continue to be illuminated by a creative tension of radical superiority.

Summary:
Peter Eisenman, one of the greatest contemporary architects, taught in Italy in 1986 at the IUAV University of Venice. This book, edited by his students Raffaella Laezza and Shuli Beimel aims to be a lucid witness of a period of great cultural change in international architectural design that found at IUAV, in the academic year 1986-87, in Peter Eisenman’s Architectural Composition III course one of its most significant moments. Twenty-five students, selected by the American professor, were introduced to new thinking and a new design method that confronted the concepts of ''time / site / space'' in a completely innovative way. This caused in each young student a real ''crash''. But wasn’t such a ''crash'' already an unstoppable, international wave? The book invites us into the thinking of the American architect who states in the interview, ''I have always loved Italy, the culture, the food, the people, so making this book was very important to me.''

Summary:
The successful conversion and expansion of abandoned buildings and relics from the industrial past have been the mission of Atelier Deshaus from Shanghai since 2001. The question of how formerly closed industrial complexes can be transformed into new, attractive places for the public is the core theme of this exhibition. It focuses on the transformation along the Huangpu River in Shanghai, whose seamless accessibility as a public space was heralded by Expo 2010 Better City - Better Life. Aedes is showing seven projects that have used the potential of former industrial sites to bring new functions to the riverbank and to which the residents attach both emotional and cultural significance. Abandoned production sites and relics of inner-city heavy industry, warehouses, and port facilities can be a huge burden on the sustainable development of a city, especially if they are seen as waste to be disposed of. With its projects, Atelier Deshaus shows how the grey energy used in them can be preserved, at least in parts, through conversion and reconstruction, and how new functions can be assigned. In the face of climate change and the generally far too energy-hungry construction industry, it is also an obvious necessity in China to take an unbiased look at existing buildings. Nevertheless, demolition is still often the priority. Atelier Deshaus counters this with a strategy of minimal intervention that sensitively heralds the transformation of the existing buildings without destroying the historical reminders.

Summary:
This book brings together eight of the most interesting and significant essays by the unequalled historian Robin Evans, author of The Projective Cast. Written over a period of 20 years from 1970, shortly after his graduation from the Architectural Association (AA), to 1990, the essays cover a wide range of architectural concerns: domestic space, society’s involvement with building types, aspects of geometry, modes of projection and drawing as a process for generating ideas. The book includes ‘Mies van der Rohe’s Paradoxical Symmetries’ and other essays first published in AA Files. Evans’s writings are supported by a new introduction and an annotated bibliography by Richard Difford. This AA Documents publication is a re-edition of the 1997 essay collection originally published by AA Publications.

Summary:
Le Corbusier’s apartment-studio is an iconic object of the twentieth century, combining the indisputable material values of the building with the intangible "sense of place" of an architect’s home. Le Corbusier, who lived there from 1934 until his death in 1965, treated it as a permanent construction site—a unique place of spatial, plastic, and constructional experimentation. The phases of change at the apartment-studio are layered over each other, and thus the apartment’s "many lives" create major philosophical problems for conservation. This first book on the apartment-studio, richly illustrated with largely unpublished visual material, presents research undertaken by the Laboratory of Techniques and Preservation of Modern Architecture (TSAM) for the Fondation Le Corbusier during preparatory investigations for the program of restoration.

Spanish architect Julio Cano Lasso (1920–1996) was celebrated for his rational and austerely engineered buildings as well as his commitment to designing social housing and urban infrastructure. Lasso’s buildings are practical, modern, and immediately recognisable for their bare-bones aesthetic. He was, in the real sense of the word, an eclectic; fusing diverse sources and periods in his built works. Featuring previously unpublished texts by authors such as William J.R. Curtis, Juhani Pallasmaa, Iñaki Ábalos, and Juan Navarro Baldeweg, as well as archival images complemented by recent photographs by Iwan Baan, this volume proudly presents Cano Lasso’s legacy.
