In "Universe", he visually examines fascinating and groundbreaking research topics in the ‘beta domain’, such as gravitational waves, new galaxies, soft robotic matter and the latest DNA technology. In this almost incomprehensible world, Jansen constructs a parallel and artistic universe, using his own images, found footage, and data visualisations. This special issue empowers and encourages the reader to choose paths, as if walking through the city, an intellectual dérive. Rather than presenting a book of pictures, its strategy provides a basic, research-driven bibliography to assist the further exploration of ideas. Opening with an introduction by Darko Radovic, it goes on to closely examine the multifaceted Tokyo metropolis from an array of perspectives and themes. These include shared housing, public bathhouses, pseudo-public space, urban spectacle, infills and alleyways, graffiti and street art, stacking historical times, hidden poverty, and more. Radovic, Kengo Kuma, and Hidenobu Jinnai discuss the city’s urban DNA.

The story of apples begins in an unexpected place: with bears. While popular culture likes to link honey with these creatures, DNA evidence shows that it might be more accurate for Winnie the Pooh to be munching on an ancestor of Red Delicious. And while apples are modern America’s second favorite fruit (after “berries”), their origins lie in ancient China. These are just(...)

And while apples are modern America’s second favorite fruit (after “berries”), their origins lie in ancient China. These are just some of the remarkable details that arise from Barrie E. Juniper and David J. Mabberley’s "The Extraordinary Story of the Apple". Written by two leading botanical experts, it’s a complete natural and cultural history of the apple.
