The denitive L.A. experience may include a shopping spree or a celebrity sighting, but it will certainly involve a car. Summary:
The denitive L.A. experience may include a shopping spree or a celebrity sighting, but it will certainly involve a car. Without a complex network of subways and buses providing access to points of interest throughout the city, visitors to L.A. and Angelenos alike must spend much of their time navigating the city's vast but often-frustrating freeway system, away from the ground and the most endearing aspects of the city. "Cruising L.A.", a driver's companion guidebook to Los Angeles, features an expertly guided seven-day driving route through L.A.'s most scenic neighborhoods, exploring their cultural and architectural features.

Summary:

Summary:
Cruise delightfully recalls a time of gracious travel, as well as the modern-day evolution of cruising at sea. It explores the design and culture of cruise ships from the golden age of the interwar period, up to the present when cruise ships have come to embrace "entertainment architecture." Packed full of illustrations of all aspects of cruise ship design—interiors, entertainment, travel posters, and other ephemera—this timely book also documents the current renaissance in cruise vacations.Traveling by cruise ship, especially between the wars and into the '50s, was the most luxurious and stylish form of transport available. Many of the greatest liners were built during that time, including France's Normandie, whose Art Deco interior was one of the most lavish—and beautiful—ever created. This up-to-date visual history of ocean travel, complete with full illustrations and a lively survey of every aspect of sailing on the high seas, will appeal to and delight a broad audience including cruise ship enthusiasts, designers, and nostalgia buffs.

Summary:
Powerful, lyrical and controversial, Alvin Baltrop's photographs are a groundbreaking exploration of clandestine gay culture in New York in the 1970s and 80s. During that era, the derelict warehouses beneath Manhattan's West Side piers became a lawless, forgotten part of the city that played host to gay cruising, drug smuggling, prostitution and suicides. Baltrop documented this scene, unflinchingly and obsessively capturing everything from fleeting naked figures in mangled architectural environments to scenes of explicit sex and police raids on the piers. His work is little known and underpublished--mainly due to its unflinching subject matter--but while often explicit, his photographs are on a par with those of Nan Goldin, Peter Hujar and Enrique Metenides. While the outside world saw New York as the glamorous playground of Studio 54, Warhol's gang and the disco era, Baltrop photographed the city's gritty flipside; his work is an important part of both gay culture and the history of New York itself. This clothbound volume compiles the Piers series in one definitive monograph, a powerful tribute to a long-forgotten world at the city's dilapidated margins.
