Summary:
As the first independent environments children encounter beyond the home, nurseries, daycare centres, and kindergartens should not appear merely as colourful fantasy worlds. Well-conceived early-learning centres and schools create a microcosm modelled on everyday life – child-friendly yes, but by no means childish. Such places offer security while inviting discovery, appropriation, and adaptation. In this issue we profile child-focused environments realised both as new builds and through adaptive reuse. A kindergarten on a disused industrial site near Copenhagen follows circular construction principles, using mostly materials salvaged from the dilapidated primary school that once stood there. Newly built daycare centres in the German state of Hessen and in Slovenia draw on local building traditions and the surrounding natural landscape. Meanwhile, a former East German telephone exchange was transformed into a playscape that anchors a childcare facility on a university campus in Merseburg.

Summary:
Celebrated in the 1930s, forgotten during the postwar period and now rediscovered, Piero Portaluppi (1888–1967) was a leading figure of 20th-century Italian architecture. Portaluppi designed the Italian Pavilion for the Universal Exposition in Barcelona in 1929; created numerous industrial buildings; was choice designer of residences for Milanese high society; and between 1956 and 1962 collaborated on architectural projects with Gio Ponti. Produced in collaboration with the Fondazione Piero Portaluppi, this monograph comprises an extensive photo album featuring new colour images of Portaluppi’s projects taken by the renowned photographer Ciro Frank Schiappa; three previously unpublished essays, illustrated with archival photos by Antonio Paoletti; documentation of architectural models; and items documenting his personal interests (cartoons, diagrams, sundials, postcards, newspaper cuttings). The volume also features an interview with Portaluppi’s nephew, the architect Piero Castellini (conducted by film director Luca Guadagnino), a biography, a list of works and a bibliography.

Summary:
The ''Moving mountains' book is a selection of material enquiries of the Swedish landscape, narrated through a series of texts, recipes and visual materials that ask how we can reconfigure and inform our understanding of the land that surrounds us. The structure of ''Moving mountains'' focuses on opposites: mining in the North and agriculture in the South, the Lapland fells and the Skåne plains, wanted and unwanted industrial materials, new and old approaches to the land. Photographs by Joshua Olley take the reader through portraits of Skåne, Halland, Uppland, Södermanland, Norrbotten and Lappland. Although the investigation was based in Sweden, the concept is reproducible, which comes across during collaborative moments in the book. The design of the book by Kiosk Studio, with its thermolacquer heat sensitive cover, directly responds to the content, meaning the narrative is as much a visual investigation as it is a text based one.

The Design Museum Gent is internationally renowned for its collection of furniture and objects from the 1600s up until today. Its works span in taste and philosophy from an ornate eighteenth-century wooden chandelier by the Ghent sculptor J.F. Allaert to an assortment of radical industrial and decorative objects by the contemporary Italian designer Ettore Sottsass. The museum's special pride is its Art Nouveau collection, which features work by prominent Belgians like Henry van de Velde, Victor Horta and Paul Hanker alongside foreign designers like Josef Hoffman and Otto Wagner of the Wiener Secession. Works by Modernists like Le Corbusier and Gaston Eysselinck are seen in context with Postmodern pieces by Allessandro Mendini, Aldo Rossi, Hans Hollein and Andrea Branzi. And Minimalist works by Maarten Van Severen are juxtaposed with more sculptural pieces by Pieter De Bruyne and Emiel Veranneman and works by outsiders like Borek Sipek and Ron Arad.

Summary:
"Geothermal Larderello" investigates contemporary urbanism by looking at the evolution of human settlement patterns in relation to geothermal energy in Larderello, Italy. Larderello is "off the map," and virtually unknown to Tuscan residents and tourists, but is one of the world's centers of geothermal power research. Alternative futures for this industrial town, which was planned by Giovanni Michelucci in the 1950s, are discussed within the context of sustainability, economics, programming, and environment. In ancient times, the Valley de Cecina was home to a spa and renowned for its healing thermal waters, while in the modern era, this steam was harnessed to generate electricity for district heating and for other uses. Larderello, with its unique landscape of agricultural fields, olive trees, cooling towers, and miles of above-ground steam pipes, is a case study for the possible confluence of geothermal power and urban design issues.

Summary:
"The tourist Venice is Venice," Mary McCarthy once observed--a sentiment very much in line with what most of the fourteen million tourists who visit the city each year experience, but at the same time a painful reality for the 65,000 Venetians who actually live there. Venice is viewed from a new perspective in this engaging book, which offers a heady, one-city tour of tourism itself. Conducting readers from the beginnings of Venetian tourism in the late Middle Ages to its emergence as a form of mass entertainment in our time, the authors explore what happens when today's "industrial tourism" collides with an ancient and ever-more-fragile culture. Giving equal consideration to those who tour Venice and those who live there, their book affords rare insight into just what it is that the touring and the toured see, experience, and elicit from each other.

Summary:
Americans still build millions of dream houses in neighborhoods that sustain Victorian stereotypes of the home as "woman's place" and the city as "man's world." Urban historian and architect Dolores Hayden tallies the personal and social costs of an American "architecture of gender" for the two-earner family, the single-parent family, and single people. Many societies have struggled with the architectural and urban consequences of women's paid employment: Hayden traces three models of home in historical perspective — the haven strategy in the United States, the industrial strategy in the former USSR, and the neighborhood strategy in European social democracies — to document alternative ways to reconstruct neighborhoods. Updated and still relevant today as the New Urbanist architects have taken up Hayden's critique of suburban space, this award-winning book is essential reading for architects, planners, public officials, and activists interested in women's social and economic equality.

Summary:
Otto Treumann (1919-2001) is regarded as a major pioneer in the modernization of graphic design in the Netherlands. Premised on Swiss typography and the Bauhaus, Treumann's oeuvre is distinguished by an easy-to-read combination of visual elements and an iconoclastic treatment of colour. These benefit from his wide knowledge of printing techniques acquired during the Second World War when he forged documents for the resistance. He enjoyed a special relationship with industrial clients, invariably achieving top quality and innovation in the arena where economics meets culture. His work has proved eminently suitable for house styles and logos, including those for Wolters Noordhoff the publishers, the Kröller-Müller Museum, the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects and El Al Airlines. He also designed posters for the Industries Fair in Utrecht, the Rotterdam Ahoy' and Tattoo in Delft. The book is designed by Irma Boom.

Summary:
Rachel Whiteread (b. 1963) creates spare, poetic sculptures that challenge perceptions of the commonplace. Working from everyday domestic items, she casts - in rubber, concrete, plaster, and polyester resin - the negative spaces inside closets and underneath beds, sinks, bathtubs, and chairs. Now, in what may be her most personal project to date, the Turner Prize-winning artist has been commissioned by Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin to make two large-scale casts from distinct spaces in a London building that she recently purchased to become her home and studio. Although the building has a history as both a synagogue and a factory, it is a product of austere postwar architecture, lacking many of the traditional embellishments associated with such structures. This fully illustrated volume documents Whiteread's process as she creates casts from this religious-cum-industrial-cum-personal space, which blurs boundaries between the spiritual and secular, as well as the public and private.
