Spomeniks literally meaning 'Monuments' in Serbo-Croatian, look like spaceships conspicuously parked up in the middle of nowhere, alien to their surroundings, their bizarre beauty deriving from both their location and imaginative symbolism. Follow in the footsteps of French photographer Jonathan 'Jonk' Jimenez as he tries to track down these super-sized public structures. Once numbering in their thousands and attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, in particular “young pioneers” for their communist and patriotic education. Pushing architecture to its limits, Spomeniks are what happens when brutalism, symbolism, space age aesthetics and abstraction meet.

Summary:
In a digital age of ever-faster technological innovation, Douglas Mandry explores the photographic medium using analog methods. For ''Unseen Sights'', published in the book ''Equivalences'', the Swiss photographer was inspired by early 20th-century postcards from the Middle East. Using acrylic paint and an airbrush, he colourized black-and-white prints of landscapes in Cappadocia, Turkey, then re-photographed the compositions. Rather than merely reproducing images, the book offered the artist an opportunity to re-interpret the pictures. Playing with layers of colour in print, the artist created a new representation – using, this time, a mechanical process.

The way we live is rapidly changing under pressure from multiple forces financial, environmental, technological, geopolitical. What we used to call home may not even exist anymore, having transmuted into a financial commodity of which the square meter is the basic unit. Yet, domesticity and the domestic space ceased long ago to be present in the architectural agenda. SQM, produced for the 2014 Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk, Belgium, charts the scale of this change using data, fiction, and a critical selection of homes and their interiors from Osama bin Laden s compound to apartment living in the age of Airbnb.

Today, a generation whose members may have been born in one country, raised in several others, and who study, live and work in a variety of locations, has come of age. The artists of this generation, embodying a multiplicity of identities, create work that addresses their transcultural experience in all its complexity.”
