Summary:
In this book, the technologist and writer Xiaowei Wang explores the political and social entanglements of technology in rural China. Their discoveries force them to challenge the standard idea that rural culture and people are backward, conservative, and intolerant. Instead, they find that rural China has not only adapted to rapid globalization but has actually innovated the technology we all use today. From pork farmers using AI to produce the perfect pig, to disruptive luxury counterfeits and the political intersections of e-commerce villages, Wang unravels the ties between globalization, technology, agriculture, and commerce in unprecedented fashion. Accompanied by humorous “Sinofuturist” recipes that frame meals as they transform under new technology, this publication is an original and probing look into innovation, connectivity, and collaboration in the digitized rural world.

Summary:
A 1976 performance by American artist Barbara T. Smith (born 1931), "I Am Abandoned" featured a conversation in real time between two psychoanalytic computer programs (two of the earliest chatbots) alongside a staging of Goya’s "The Naked Maja," in which the artist projected an image of the famous painting on top of a clothed female model. This publication includes a full transcript of the "conversation" between the two programs, documentation and ephemera from the performance, and Smith’s reflections on the night. To revisit I Am Abandoned today is to see the critical and liberating potential that art can have when it intervenes in new technologies. Against today’s backdrop of AI, Smith’s early work with emerging technologies, and in this case chatbots, is prophetic and hints at the contemporary conversation around the gendered and racialized machinic biases of our current computational landscape.

Through an extensive investigation of the new searches and work productions of international artists, the new CURA. 41, New World Agency™ raises questions related to the ability of art and artists to have a transformative role as regards the apparent irreversibility of the events that impact our present. In a shift between fiction and reality, New World Agency™ explores, with a transgenerational gaze, the artists who foresaw the building of new possible worlds and new modes of agency for alternative futures. Not only AI, CGI, videogames and virtual reality, but also highly advanced analog tools, animatronics, and mechanical devices are able to forge the imaginative, creative and narrative space of artists, founding new realities, in which mythology, ghosts, topoi, fables, childhood memories, technology, pop culture and magic intertwine, in the comprehensive illusion to be in different places and in part of it.

Summary:
Already known as one of Mexico’s greatest architects, Tatiana Bilbao (born 1972) has created some of the country’s most striking buildings. Her first project was a collaboration with artist Gabriel Orozco on his beach house near Puerto Escondido, and she quickly developed a collaborative approach, working with artists such as Ai Weiwei on projects in China and Spain, or with the Culiacán Botanical Garden (designed by engineer and gardener Carlos Murillo) to install art works and service buildings. Bilbao’s buildings always take social conditions into account, as demonstrated in projects such as her design for a pilgrimage route. Featuring these projects and more, this overview provides insights into the Mexican cultural, artistic and building traditions that Bilbao incorporates into her projects. The volume addresses the question of the use of collage in architecture and embeds Bilbao’s work in a contemporary as well as a historical context.

Summary:
The built environment is a critical factor in the climate equation. Approximately 40 percent of global emissions derive from the construction, operation, and demolition of human settlements. The 21st century must be the century of re-entanglement, where quintessential functions (housing, work, culture, recreation, etc.) are reintegrated within urban spaces; where socioeconomic and ecological systems form a mutually supportive network of networks; and where past, present, and future are perceived as interwoven waves in the river of time. Fortunately, opportunities exist to transform the built environment from a carbon source to a carbon sink through, e.g. timber construction high-rise buildings, circular bioeconomy methods, AI-assisted design, smart recycling technology, multifunctional land use, integrated regional resource management, and community-based urban development, to name just a few. This volume compiles the papers presented by world-renowned scientists, architects, spatial planners, activists, and policy makers at the Reconstructing the Future for People and Planet conference, held at the Vatican in June 2022.
