These lectures are now available in the format of this book: discussed is the work of the Uruguayan engineer Eladio Dieste, who pioneered the use of thin, light-filled shell structures in masonry. Cecil Balmond recounts his collaboration with architects Rem Koolhaas and Daniel Libeskind. The Swiss bridge designer Christian Menn discusses his iconic long-span prestressed concrete bridges, including the new Charles River Bridge in Boston. Leslie E. Robertson, who is especially known for his work on the structural design of the World Trade Center complex with Minoru Yamasaki, discusses this design along with many other projects. In Buildings Must Die, Stephen Cairns and Jane Jacobs look awry at core architectural concerns. They examine spalling concrete and creeping rust, contemplate ruins old and new, and pick through the rubble of earthquake-shattered churches, imploded housing projects, and demolished Brutalist office buildings. Established by Riek Bakker and Ank Bleeker in 1977, the Bakker & Bleeker Bureau has functioned as a laboratory for the landscape design and urban planning community. Operating as Bureau B+B since 1990, the office has always taken an interdisciplinary approach, employing not just landscape architects and urban planners but also land development experts, architects and industrial designers. It has served as an incubator for some of the Netherlands' leading creative professionals : Winy Maas, Adriaan Geuze, Michael van Gessel, West 8, Karres en Brands and Rietveld Landscape, amog others. The development of Bureau B+B coincides with the emancipation of Dutch postwar landscape architecture and urbanism; self-assured and autonomous, the Bureau soon ranked among the world’s foremost urban institutes, thanks among other things to its design for the Parc de la Villette in Paris (1982), a commission won ex aequo with designers such as Rem Koolhaas and Bernard Tschumi. The bureau has always been interdisciplinary, employing landscape architects, urban planners, architects, land development experts and industrial designers. This publication presents a generous selection from its 1,500 projects, including the Dutch Pavilion for the World Expo 2000 in Hanover, the Waldpark in Potsdam and the Wollefoppenpark in Rotterdam. The Netherlands is crowded and so it is hardly surprising that architects endeavour to "stack" landscapes and functions as the Dutch pavilion in the Expo 2000, designed by MVRDV demonstrated. Here, new ideas and concepts in architecture and landscape design fall on the fertile ground. Rem Koolhaas had prepared the way: nothing must stay as it is, even the open countryside and the towns can be changed, moulded, shaped. Issue 229 of the magazine Quaderns explores the theme of the border in its literal sense -the border as a political and cultural separation between countries or geographical areas- but also as a place which gives rise to cultural crossovers alongside its function as separator. This issue looks firstly at the transformation of two formerly divided cities, Berlin and Beirut, which are currently undergoing processes of integration of what used to be opposing sectors and of recovery as city-centre spaces of the wastelands generated by division. Then it analyses the present-day situation in two border areas characterised by strong economic and cultural contrasts between the two sides of the dividing line: the border between the United States and Mexico, and the Strait of Gibraltar. The works of architects and artists who have recently worked in these places are taken as a starting point for debate about the strategies brought to bear in frontier territory by urbanism, art and architecture. The issue includes an introductory text by Saskia Sassen and features Mathias Sauerbruch on Berlin, Álvaro Siza on Ceuta, Rafael Moneo and Ousama Kabbani on Beirut, and Gloria Anzaldúa on the border between Mexico and the United States.
