While the function of a building may change over time, its architecture remains. In lessons, EAST examines the aspects of construction that determine the use, morphology, and spatial structure of buildings. The history and change of these aspects serve as a basis for analyzing the design of new buildings as well as for reusing and transforming existing buildings. Urban settlements are thus a laboratory for architectural ideas, which are further developed using the technical means and spatial concepts of our time. The joint project work in the studio spacefacilitates a continuous discussion of different design approaches and helps the students to develop their own ideas.

Summary:
In her acclaimed “The Design of Childhood”, Alexandra Lange uncovered the histories of toys, classrooms, and playgrounds. She now turns her sharp eye to another subject we only think we know. She chronicles postwar architects' and merchants' invention of the mall, revealing how the design of these marketplaces played an integral role in their cultural ascent. In Lange's perceptive account, the mall becomes newly strange and rich with contradiction: Malls are environments of both freedom and exclusion--of consumerism, but also of community. This book is a highly entertaining and evocative promenade through the mall's story of rise, fall, and ongoing reinvention, for readers of any generation.

The newest title in the Princeton Architectural Press Campus Guide series takes readers on a tour of Illinois Institute of Technology, one of the landmarks of modern American architecture. With a master plan and twenty renowned buildings by Mies van der Rohe, IIT has long been a pilgrimage site for architects and students of design. Thousands of visitors arrive each year to see International Style masterpieces such as S. R. Crown Hall, home of IIT's College of Architecture and one of Mies's greatest works. Today, IIT is in the midst of an exciting new chapter in its design history. A new student centre designed by Rem Koolhaas and his Office for Metropolitan Architecture has once again put IIT at the forefront of the design world. Meanwhile, a new master plan for the campus, new landscaping, and a residence-hall complex by Helmut Jahn have reinvigorated student life and revitalized the surrounding community of Chicago's South Side. Featuring archival images of the Mies buildings as well as newly commissioned photographs of IIT's latest additions, this beautifully produced guide presents a comprehensive architectural walk through America's most distinguished modern campus.

Summary:
This illustrated guide to 100 of the world's most important concert halls and opera houses examines their architecture and engineering and discusses their acoustical quality as judged by conductors and music critics. The descriptions and photographs will serve as a valuable guide for today's peripatetic performers and music lovers. With technical discussions relegated to appendices, the book can be read with pleasure by anyone interested in musical performance. The photographs (specially commissioned for this book) and architectural drawings (all to the same scale) together with modern acoustical data on each of the halls provide a rich and unmatched resource on the design of halls for presenting musical performances. Together with the technical appendices, the data and drawings will serve as an invaluable reference for architects and engineers involved in the design of spaces for the performance of music. Leo Beranek is an internationally recognized authority in acoustics who has consulted on the design of dozens of important auditoriums around the World. He has received the highest honors of the Acoustical Society of America and of the Audio Engineering Society and has just been awarded the US National Medal of Science at the White House.
