Building Subjects, the fourth issue of Standpunkte Magazine, is a collaboration between the architect De Peter Yi, the art historian Nancy P. The publication revolves around collective housing in China, an architectural challenge expressive of the country's ongoing negotiations between its rich history and undetermined future. The study combines typological research with the modes of the architectural manifesto by establishing an exchange between cultural-historical observations, the consideration of contemporary socio-economic pressures, and evolving architectural aspirations. Through a close reading of spaces from monumental utopian communes in Beijing to round earthen dwellings in the Fujian province, Building Subjects stages collective housing as a key to residential architecture in China. The publication is simultaneously inward and outward looking, and this duality is also reflected in its meticulously composed layout: documentary photography and detailed axonometric drawings are juxtaposed to establish a correspondence between old and new, between reality and projection.

Pour chaque module, l'architecte a travaillé avec des matériaux différents : la tôle pour Leica, le plexiglas transparent pour Polaroid, le bois, le métal et les miroirs pour Nikon et le papier de riz pour Seagull. Les œuvres vidéo inédites de Yang Fudong et Wang Jian Wei ont été conçues spécialement pour les modules dans lesquels elles sont projetées. SweaterLodge, un projet de Pechet and Robb Studio de Vancouver, a été sélectionné par un concours national avec jury pour représenter le Canada à l’édition 2006 de la Biennale de Venise en architecture. La 10ième édition de cette Biennale, qui est la plus prestigieuse manifestation d’architecture du monde, sera présentée de septembre à novembre 2006, à Venise en Italie. SweaterLodge explore l’influence de la culture des loisirs et de la nature sur la vie urbaine à Vancouver. L’élément majeur de SweaterLodge est un abri géant en molleton Polarfleece fait de fibres plastiques provenant de canettes recyclées. Suspendu à l’intérieur du pavillon canadien, ce vêtement abrite les visiteurs, comme un grand cocon orange. Les visiteurs qui entrent dans ce grand chandail peuvent assister à des projections de films numériques montrant des capsules d’une ville où nature sauvage et vie urbaine s’entremêlent. Chaque projection est activée par un spectateur qui pédale sur un vélo stationnaire : plus il pédale vite, plus la bande vidéo passe rapidement. Les caisses d’expédition et les bagages utilisés pour le transport de l’exposition se transformeront pour devenir le mobilier du pavillon, SweaterLodge présupposant un avenir où les objets seront polyvalents : un chandail se convertit en abri, des bagages deviennent des sofas, et des vélos, des projecteurs. Ces éléments mis ensemble brossent le portrait d’une ville où le culte de la nature et la culture urbaine s’imbriquent le plus souvent de manière riche et surprenante.

"Borderwall as architecture" is an artistic and intellectual hand grenade of a book, and a timely re-examination of what the physical barrier that divides the United States of America from the United Mexican States is and could be. It is both a protest against the wall and a projection about its future. Through a series of propositions suggesting that the nearly seven hundred miles of wall is an opportunity for economic and social development along the border that encourages its conceptual and physical dismantling, the book takes readers on a journey along a wall that cuts through a “third nation”—the Divided States of America. On the way the transformative effects of the wall on people, animals, and the natural and built landscape are exposed and interrogated through the story of people who, on both sides of the border, transform the wall, challenging its existence in remarkably creative ways. Coupled with these real-life accounts are counterproposals for the wall, created by Rael’s studio, that reimagine, hyperbolize, or question the wall and its construction, cost, performance, and meaning. Rael proposes that despite the intended use of the wall, which is to keep people out and away, the wall is instead an attractor, engaging both sides in a common dialogue.
