Summary:
In this book, renowned architectural historian Dietrich Neumann presents a new, critical look at Mies and complicates the established narrative about him. Diverging from the reverential posture of many existing accounts, Neumann insists on the importance of the contemporary contex t—social, political, and architectural— for understanding the architect’s life and work. The book draws on many overlooked archival and primary sources to demonstrate how and why Mies’s designs were shaped and received, foregrounding contemporary critics’ responses and the work of Mies’s collaborators and peers. It presents several previously unknown buildings, projects, and furniture designs and challenges long-established interpretations of key works. Comprehensively illustrated and covering the entirety of Mies’s career, this ambitious book is the most substantial account to date of the life and work of one of the most important architects of the twentieth century.

Summary:

Summary:
"Dreams and disillusions" explores the plethora of ideas and ideologies that have shaped and reshaped cities in profound ways. However, unlike a conventional title on the history of urbanism and architecture, its research fluctuates between the world of concrete reality and the multiple universes that exist in lucid prose, poetic visions, and the outrageous imaginations of history’s greatest and most (in)famous minds. In their thoughts are the foundations for political trends and new civilisations, alternative mappings and unlikely phenomena. The six chapters reveal dreams that were fundamental to the origin of great cities, underpinning the stories of the many lives within; and how, through circumstance or manipulation, fortunate coincidence or planned perfection, desires are sometimes left defeated and disillusioned.

The new "A.MAG Long Collection" presents a single project by a single architect in a special graphic design format that distinguishes it from other collections the magazine publishes. Each instalment will document works of different scales and formal contexts. This unique selection of projects which establish new paradigms in architecture begins with David Adjaye’s Mole House. The derelict property in the London borough of Hackney, made infamous by a landlord who incessantly tunnelled underneath it without a permit, was completely renovated by the architect as a three-storey live/work space that also serves as a single-family dwelling for artist Sue Weber.

Summary:
Richard Murphy is a multi award-winning architect. The materials he employs vary from stone (rubble, smooth ashlar or rusticated), with carefully assembled steel sections that form the structure, stairs and handrails, corrugated iron or planted roofing, dressed lead flashing, etched glass blocks, mirrors, with timber and coloured and polished plaster as warm interior finishes. All the materials are used with great precision, clarity as well as ambiguity. He is well known as an architect who has been influenced by the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa (about whom he has written the definitive analysis of his most important work, the Castelvecchio Museum in Verona), but Murphy’s architecture is never a pastiche of Scarpa, and frequently echoes and develops other influences such as Glenn Murcutt, Frank Lloyd Wright or Richard MacCormac, for whom he worked.
