Summary:

Summary:
Material World is the first monograph on the celebrated Canadian photographer. MacCallum's rich black and white images of sprawling industrial landscapes, luminous interior spaces of warehouses and factories, the jumbled chaos of downtown hardware and textiles outlets, all sing with an austere grace and a fine attention to detail. His objective documentary style avoids obvious commentary, allowing the material presence of the subject matter to emerge. The work comes from a keen interest in social history and the series of photographs represented here tell a story of commerce, labour and the economic relationship of cities to their industrial hinterlands. Accompanying the plates are contextual texts by novelist and media columnist Russell Smith, curator Michael Baker and artist Terence Dick, as well as an illuminating interview with the artist. This beautiful, accessible book presents the remarkable work of Peter MacCallum to a broad range of readers.

Summary:
The Victorian age is much closer to us in time than we might believe. Yet at that time, in the most technologically advanced nation in the world, people buried meat in fresh earth to prevent mould forming and wrung sheets out in boiling water with their bare hands. Such household drudgery was routinely performed by the grandparents of people still living, but the knowledge of it has passed as if it had never been. Judith Flanders's book is laid out like a Victorian house, taking you through the story of daily life from room to room. In each space she depicts the home's furnishings and decoration: from childbirth in the master bedroom, through the scullery and kitchen, the separate male and female domains of the drawing room and the parlour, and ending in the sickroom. A rich selection from diaries, letters, advice books, magazines, and paintings fills the rooms with the people and personalities of the age.

Summary:
The widely known image of Lucerne is of the city on the Lake of Four Cantons, below Mt Pilatus, framed by snow-covered peaks and gentle hills, equipped with bridges and churches, mansions, grand hotels, lanes in the historical centre, and lakeside walks. This long overdue architectural guide also spotlights the city's notable 20th century architectural tradition, including buildings by renowned European architects such as Jean Nouvel, Diener & Diener and Hans Kollhoff. In six "strolls through space and time" and a "detour" to eight neighbouring localities, the author and expert on 20th century Swiss and Lucerne architecture Otti Gmür systematically describes and documents the major buildings of the 20th century and the present. Descriptions of complexes, historical and new general plans and references to earlier buildings that are part of the complexes or that have been adapted and altered in recent times round off the image of the City of Lucerne and its urban development. The guide is intended to animate and accompany a real or imaginary visit to Lucerne.

Summary:
"Matchibako" depicts Japan's swift transformation into an industrial empire in the early 20th century, as illustrated in the infinitesimal advertisements on matchboxes from the period. In an uncertain society and its changing leisure market, matches joined cigarettes in Western-style hotels and cafes, and in sushi bars next door. Patrons might be found in Western dress or traditional kimono, debating Marx or the latest silent film, but all saw themselves reflected in the new graphism. Although most were anonymously designed, these tiny remainders alternately show the influence of Cubism and the Bauhaus in illustration and English type, and retain conventional wood block fonts and right-to-left Japanese text.

La nécessaire mise en place d'une politique commune visant à les protéger est aujourd'hui d'actualité.
