Summary:
Building/Art discusses changing ideas about the nature and function of the city as an essential cultural network, one that each of its inhabitants participates in, whether consciously or unconsciously. The city acts as a backdrop to everyday life and influences the ways in which individuals interact with a greater cultural community. How would life be different for us as individuals if we lived in a different kind of city? What interventions can be made at an architectural level to make our city a more engaging place to live? In this theoretical discussion and visual display of urbanism, vital connections are made between modernism as an international movement and its manifestations in Canadian architecture. With contributions from experts in diverse fields of inquiry, Building/Art offers a discussion of the dynamic relationship between form and culture in word and picture.

Throughout history and across social and cultural contexts, most systems of belief—whether religious or secular—have ascribed wisdom to those who see reality as that which transcends the merely material. Summary:
Throughout history and across social and cultural contexts, most systems of belief—whether religious or secular—have ascribed wisdom to those who see reality as that which transcends the merely material. Yet, as the studies collected here show, the immaterial is not easily separated from the material. Humans are defined, to an extraordinary degree, by their expressions of immaterial ideals through material forms. The essays in ''Materiality'' explore varied manifestations of materiality from ancient times to the present. In assessing the fundamental role of materiality in shaping humanity, they signal the need to decenter the social within social anthropology in order to make room for the material. Considering topics as diverse as theology, technology, finance, and art, the contributors—most of whom are anthropologists—examine the many different ways in which materiality has been understood and the consequences of these differences.

Summary:
How consciously do we experience colour, light and space? Does a room seem too wide or long because of its colour? Does the outside colour scheme of a building anticipate the inside? When do certain colors oppress and when do they aerate or energize? Does a room improve with less or more light? How do colours influence our perception, alter the overall effect of a built(...)

How consciously do we experience colour, light and space? Does a room seem too wide or long because of its colour? Does the outside colour scheme of a building anticipate the inside? When do certain colors oppress and when do they aerate or energize? Does a room improve with less or more light? How do colours influence our perception, alter the overall effect of a built environment and thereby shift the relations of space to our bodies? Friederike Tebbe examines the physical manifestations of colour, their perceptions and interpretations. Tebbe is concerned with colour perception as a primary proprioceptive experience, and integrates the insights gleaned from active research into her practical work in concrete architecture. This selection from both realms of her work provides a colourful range of imagery that is full of surprising transformations and ideas.

Summary:
The effect of architectural and artistic forms is based on the phenomena of the basic elements: point, line and plane. Architectural space is defined by its boundaries, where each element is evaluated by its inherent energies. As architecture is also the organization of space, these elements are described in terms of their influence on each other and on their surroundings. In an attempt to understand these elements in terms of architecture, this book examines them based on the research of Bauhaus member Wassily Kandinsky. Through the inherent qualities of these elements we can understand the effect of energies, tensions, and dynamics in all existing objects, buildings and landscapes as the organization of movement and stillness. This book contains diagrams and examples especially selected to describe these elements and their architectural manifestations and to show the manifold ways in which they communicate with us.
