Europe has its own fair share of such mammoths: a pratically unused railway station designed by Santiago Calatrava near Lyon, the frame of an Aldo Rossi shopping mall in Berlin, a lonely feeder road in the middle of nowhere, now slowly being reclaimed by nature... On his search for new developments in ruins, the Swiss photographer Christian Helmle discovered a vast amount of monumental solitary buildings and complexes throughout Europe's cities and countrysides. Relieved of their original functions, the barren structures have lost any connection to their environments, appearing alien and surreal. Throught Christian Helmle's shots they develop their own individual, touchingly melancholic aesthetic.

Its subjective arguments and personal reflections on the field's practice and discourse consider what is (and is not) happening and is (and is not) being said: Architecture Bulletin reflects on the field and all of its potential significance. This, its third issue, tackles the many manifestations of the city, the power centers in street life, the ways in which public spaces are "hacked" by subversive street artists and the ways in which public space in the average city now extends into the virtual domain. Corollary essays reflect on the impact of the hyper-reality of the shopping mall on social behavior, and on social interventions that improve the livability of architecture.

Stefano Boeri is one of the few practices of international renown that has managed to overcome the difficulties intrinsic to the situation Italy presents for architecture studios and to make of these a virtue. His career as an architect has gone hand in hand with a commitment to teaching, criticism, publishing, politics and cultural agitation, and the projects he has tackled in these fields are numerous. To this we might add an abundant oeuvre unusually productive in terms of Italian parameters including public and private buildings, extending from apartment blocks and offices, a shopping mall and a small art centre in Milan, to more paradigmatic works like the remodelling of La Maddalena Arsenal (Sardinia), the apartment towers of the Vertical Forest in Milan and the Centre Régional de la Méditerranée in Marseille.

Summary:
London’s Foreign Office Architects are redefining the "shopping center" typology in Istanbul; rather than being an isolated world of consumption, cut off from its urban environment, their "Meydan" mall forms a public square in a new part of town, a place of meetings and encounters. The interior of the central European city, evolved over the centuries, is the role model for this new building. The publication documents Meydan’s development – from the international competition among firms such as BRT Architects, Chapman + Taylor and J.S.K. Architects to its construction – and describes the challenges of concept and design through reports and interviews. The developers of this project have taken on responsibility for urban planning and searched for possible answers to the problems affecting the megacity of Istanbul, in which public squares and green areas are few and far between. The resulting architecture blends into Istanbul’s cityscape in a very remarkable way.

Summary:
A really well-designed public toilet is a rare and welcome discovery. It adds greatly to the impression made on a building's users -- whether in a restaurant, mall, airport or hotel. And, in the case of public toilets in parks and streets, a clean and aesthetically pleasant public toilet leaves the user with a positive opinion of the city as a whole. For much of the 20th century, "cheap and durable" was the rule. That trend is changing. "Public toilet design" presents the best projects made in the last two years, worldwide. There are more than 50 public spaces shown, with the "facilities" well integrated into good design. There are more than 600 full-color photographs. Each project is accompanied by plans and detailed descriptions that show the transformation of the public toilet as its planning, development and construction took shape over the last few years.

This illustrated book looks at why the world's most interesting buildings are becoming the hottest destinations for today's travelers. In the last few decades architecture has become a major focus for travelers, rather than merely a part of a larger itinerary. Illustrated with nearly one hundred color photographs, this series of essays and contributions by scholars, critics, architects, and artists explores the role of architecture in the contemporary tourist imagination. From Mont Saint Michel and the Taj Mahal to Bilbao's Guggenheim museum and the Blur building in Switzerland's lake Neuchâtel, the authors focus on how certain iconic buildings have found their way into the cultural consciousness. At the same time they offer insights as to why other buildings, such as Minnesota's Mall of America and the faux architecture of Las Vegas, have become integral to their regions' tourist economy-and postulate how this success will influence architecture of the future.

Summary:
In City/Art anthropologists, literary and cultural critics, a philosopher, and an architect explore how creative practices continually reconstruct the urban scene in Latin America. The contributors, all Latin Americanists, describe how creativity—broadly conceived to encompass urban design, museums, graffiti, film, music, literature, architecture, performance art, and more—combines with nationalist rhetoric and historical discourse to define Latin American cities. Taken together, the essays model different ways of approaching Latin America’s urban centers not only as places that inspire and house creative practices but also as ongoing collective creative endeavors themselves. The essays range from an examination of how differences of scale and point of view affect people’s experience of everyday life in Mexico City to a reflection on the transformation of a prison into a shopping mall in Uruguay, and from an analysis of Buenos Aires’ preoccupation with its own status and cultural identity to a consideration of what Miami means to Cubans in the United States.
