Description:
Project series documents Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's work for the renewal of the Museum of Anthropology, at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. This project series concerns work on the Museum grounds starting from 2005 to the early 2010s. It includes restorations work and consultations for maintenance of the grounds, various additions, including the addition of a plaza and a turnaround (also identified as a bus loop in the fonds documents) or modifications for events held on site. It also includes the installation of the Yosef Wosk Reflecting Pool, a permanent reflecting pond in 2009-2010. The pond was initially included in Oberlander original landscape design of 1975. It has since been temporarly filled in three occasions. The permanent pond was officially opened in 2010. The project series contains predominantly working drawings, such as site plans, landscape plans, planting plans, irrigation plans, and grading plans, and a few design development drawings, such as sketches, studies and details, including for the bus loop and the new plaza. The drawings for this project aslo includes sets of plans of the building used as reference. The project is also documented through textual records, including correspondence with clients, consultants and contractors, meetings notes and minutes, specifications, schematic design report and documentation. The project series also contains photographs, including digital photographs of the interior and exterior of the Museum and of the lanscaping. Source: Herrington, Susan. Records include plans, drawings, research material, presentations, approval planning, building specification, list of plans, final handover of the arch bridge, etc. The bulk of records are CAD drawings and 3D models of the design development and planning. The drawings are organized by type of plan: site plan, sections, axonometric views, etc. As for 3D models, they are organized mostly by file format, and then by date. The text is followed by a lithograph after Lemaitre, which depicts the exterior of the "serres chaudes", and by 14 prints engraved/etched by Marlier depicting the buildings designed by Rohault de Fleury for the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle between 1833 and 1839. The "serres chaudes" are illustrated by 8 prints: interior perspectives, plans, elevations, sections and details of the prefabricated columns. Four prints are included for the Galerie de minéralogie et de géologie, the monkey house and the reservoirs - mostly elevations, plans and sections. Also included is a site plan of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle and one print of comparative examples - mostly plans, sections and details - of English "serres chaudes", including the Warm House and the Temperate House at the Colosseum in London, the Temperate House at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, Camellia House and Palm House at Loddiges Nursery in Hackney, and a glasshouse with a semidome, also in Hackney.

This project was undertaken in preparation for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting, held at the museum in the same year, to restore and improve conditions of the original landscape plan designed by Cornelia Hahn Oberlander between 1975 and 1977. The project series includes sketches, design development drawings, including site plans with Oberlander's annotations of the restoration to be done, grading plans, and landscape plans showing existing conditions, presentation drawings of the proposed improvements, and reference working drawings. The project is also documented through photographic material, including photographs of the landscaping before the improvement work and and photographs of the landscaping and the museum. The project series also comprises textual records, such as a proposal, concept notes by Oberlander, correspondence, including correspondence with clients, consultants and contractors, meetings notes, and specifications.
