Leurs costumes, faits de peaux de bêtes ou de végétaux, sertis d'ossements ou ceinturés de cloches, chapeautés de cornes ou de bois de cerfs, sidèrent par l'extraordinaire diversité et la prodigieuse beauté de leurs formes. Les portraits photographiques d'hommes sauvages de Charles Fréger subliment cette suspension provisoire de la normalité qu'est la mascarade et révèlent une tradition méconnue d'une étonnante richesse. Toutes les figures photographiées sont décrites, en fin d'ouvrage, dans le contexte du rituel auquel elles se rattachent.
