They were also sent abroad to serve as international cultural "ambassadors," rallying Allied and neutral nations to the Soviet cause. Drawn from the Art Institute of Chicago''s collection, as well as other private and public holdings, these TASS posters have not been seen since World War II. An international team of scholars presents the TASS posters both as unique historical objects and as artworks that reveal how preeminent artists of the day used unconventional technical and visual means to contribute to the war effort, marking a major chapter in the history of design and propaganda. Generously illustrated, the book presents photographs, documentary materials, and memorabilia in meaningful juxtapositions with images of the TASS posters. Also included are documents illuminating the expression of Russian cultural life in the United States during the war, opening a fascinating window onto the war along the Eastern Front.

With his recently published book “Tokyo Compression”, which shows depressing impressions from the subway system in Tokyo, the photographer raises the question: In how far may, should or must photographers deal with the public today? Michael Wolf takes up this topic in his work “Street View”, which has been started at the same time as “Tokyo Compression”, and reinterprets the genre of the street photography in a highly unconventional way by using the almost inexhaustible picture pool of the Google Tool as basic material for his own images. With the camera in front of the screen he gets “his” images out of the automatically generated, authorless Google screens. Extreme details and geographical fade-ins of the software, which usually should serve the orientation, induce photographs which have an irritating as well as alarming effect like the underground portraits from Tokyo.

Also working independently, Summers created projects for C.F Murphy Associates, such as the McCormick Convention Centre and the Malcolm X College in Chicago. Later with Ridgway Limited, he was responsible for the the acclaimed restoration of the Biltmore Hotels in Los Angeles. Familiar with bronze as a building material, Summers used his knowledge to design elegant furniture and household objects before devoting himself entirely to producing artworks using this medium. This volume is the first presentation of Gene Summers’ architectural and artistic work, surveying the many areas in which he was active. Phyllis Lambert, founder of the Canadian Centre for Architecture president of the International Confederation of Architectural Museums, provides an enlightening introduction to his work.

''SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change'' is published in conjunction with the sixth Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB 2025) under the artistic direction of Florencia Rodriguez. In a world defined by crisis and uncertainty, where architects are researching, relearning, and reimagining, the volume marks not only a change in direction but also presents provocative inquiries about a redefinition in the substance and fundamentals of the field. It is an invitation to think with others, to project with intention, and to set new grounds for the interpretation and design of our built environments. In the same spirit, the book unfolds the many faces of ''SHIFT'' through collective, multilayered, and multidimensional conversations, visual essays, and manifestos. CAB 2025 participants’ voices are brought to print through a transcript of a five-hour conversation marathon that tackled topics such as new realism, the magic in the ordinary, pleasures in the urban, and the need to critically shift architecture’s language, as well as a repository of manifestos exploring other possible worlds. Beyond the exhibition, ''SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change'' also calls upon practitioners from different fields to discuss the current state of education in architecture schools, the challenges of material culture, the future of housing, and exhibitions as devices for change.

Operating between 1969 and 1980 out of southwest Detroit, the Co-op was the site for the printing of the first English translation of Guy Debord’s "Society of the Spectacle" and journals like "Radical America," produced by the Students for a Democratic Society; books such as "The Political Thought of James Forman" printed by the League of Revolutionary Black Workers; and the occasional broadsheet, such as Judy Campbell’s stirring indictment, "Open letter from ‘white bitch’ to the black youths who beat up on me and my friend."F redy Perlman was not a printer or a designer by training, but was deeply engaged in the ideas, issues, processes and materiality of printing. While at the Detroit Printing Co-op, he radically rethought the possibilities of print by experimenting with overprinting, collage techniques, different kinds of papers and so on. Behind the calls to action and class consciousness written in his publications, there was an innate sense of the politics of design, experimentation and pride of craft.
