Summary:
Thirty of the world's most talented architects, including Norman Foster, Thom Mayne, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, talk about the houses they designed for themselves over the past decade in Architects' Houses. What inspired them, what were the constraints, how did their concepts take shape? Michael Webb explores the creative process and traces the influence of architects' houses over the past two hundred years, from Jefferson's Monticello to the creations of Charles and Ray Eames, Toyo Ito, and Frank Gehry. Texts, sketches, and plans illustrate houses that differ widely, in size, material, character, and location. Spacious or frugal, ambitious or modest, refined or rough-edged, daring or reductive, these adventurous dwellings make a statement. This generously illustrated book brims with ideas and inspiration as these architects' houses show different answers to the question: how can a house enrich lives and its natural surroundings?

Summary:
Imagine a power plant that is also the perfect place to have a picnic. On the foreshore of St. Kilda, Australia rises just such a structure—one that merges renewable energy production with leisure, recreation, and education. This volume imagines a world where the infrastructures that power our cities are designed to be reflections of culture, where public parks provide clean electricity to the city grid, and where the art that brings depth and vibrancy to our lives also measurably responds to the challenges of climate change. ''Energy Overlays'' provides a glimpse into a post-carbon future where energy infrastructure is seamlessly woven into the fabric of our cities as works of public art.

Their work is characterized by the willingness to think “outside the box” and consider all existing possibilities in order to find the best, sometimes unexpected, solution. The exhibition presents a selection of projects, including the House on the Lake, the House in Odenwald and the European School, all located in and around Frankfurt am Main. Three further school projects are currently under construction in Berlin. Summary:
Focused on post-labor, psychopathology, and plasticity of human mind and body, this book introduces insight, critiques, and propositions in the area of “self-design,” ranging from design and architecture to science, media, history, philosophy, and contemporary art. The field of design has radically expanded. As a practice, design is no longer limited to the world of material objects, but rather extends from carefully crafted individual looks and online identities, to the surrounding galaxies of personal devices, new materials, interfaces, networks, systems, infrastructures, data, chemicals, organisms, and genetic codes.

Summary:
The publication begins from the Andrea Branzi’s reflection on the relationship civility-design, from the Radical’s research on mass-production civilization to the 'infinite territories', proposing new territories able to interpret and anticipate the new dynamics of society. In particular, if the first chapters review the historical/critical works of Andrea Branzi and of Radical Movement, the last opens a new parenthesis of research, right now never expressed: the issues ignored by Modernity, like life, death, destiny and the sacred: themes which underline the new drama and the fracture between tragedy and normality, between consumerism and death, between theology and technology, between the silence of reason and the voice of an irrational reality.

Summary:
This volume is a comprehensive monograph chronicling the personal and professional journey of the Indian architect and urban conservationist Brinda Somaya, from 1975 to the present. Belonging to the 'Bridge Generation', her work transcends stylistic vocabulary and draws its inspiration from Indian culture, the landscape of the subcontinent and principles of sustainable design and intervention. The book explores a cross-section of Somaya's diverse typology of projects, including housing, institutions, conservation, urban design, social design and industrial works that represent a unique 'non-stylistic' grammar that has a sense of 'order and appropriateness'. Situating her work in a broader context, the essays in this volume offer multiple perspectives on Somaya's accomplishments, while the dialogues outline the concerns central to her work.

Summary:
Buildings designated brutalist in style were largely built in the 1960s and 1970s, exuding an aura of daring, uncompromising design today. It is the French term "brut,“ meaning raw or unrefined, that lent its name to this particular architectural phenomenon. Vilified for decades as the step-child of modernism, brutalist architecture is now enjoying an astonishing comeback as the latest discovery among digital trendsetters. As well as fascinating users across social networks, brutalism is also inspiring contemporary architecture. Large-scale sculptural forms, coarsely finished materials and floor plans that defy convention merge with contemporary design to generate enthralling new creations. This book offers a sophisticated overview of post-war and contemporary brutalist buildings and of the relationship – in appearance and design, in the grand concepts and the smallest details – between brutalism today and its ancestors.
