Summary:
Winnipeg-based architecture firm Green Blankstein Russell and Associates (GBR) opened in the slow years of the Great Depression. From this inauspicious starting point the firm would grow to become, by the 1950s and 60s, a major player on the Canadian architectural scene: the largest architectural office between Ontario and British Columbia, with seven offices in four provinces. GBR was a hub for partnership and training, and was a pioneering force in its inclusion of women and members of Canada's diverse cultural communities within the field of design. Covering a wide range of individual buildings and practitioners, this book explores the significant mark GBR made on its hometown and across the country, as well as the firm’s role as a leader in the growth of Modernist architecture in Canada.

Summary:
Zeinstra van Gelderen Architects works on a variety of commissions that include architecture, urbanism, public space and interior design. The practice is drawn towards exploring the issues that somehow are related to architecture, art and society. Subsequently, they try to pursue the realisation the designs that follow from this exploration. It’s not so much the particular scale, but more the experimental challenge they set themselves as designers. The cooperation between Mikel van Gelderen and Jurjen Zeinstra started in 1990, when both were working as editors for the architectural magazine OASE. After winning the Europan competition with their entry 'High-density open space' (1996, together with Ira Koers) this cooperation has become solid and resulted in the design and realisation of many projects.

Summary:
When we view photographs of unfurnished interiors, what we see looks almost nothing like the homes we ultimately inhabit: blank, labyrinthine spaces, featureless rooms with walls that meet at odd angles and exits that lead nowhere. These strange and seamless spaces make up a peculiar genre of representation: views of the unfurnished interior in architects’ online portfolios. 'House Tour' which accompanied Switzerland’s award-winning contribution to the 2018 International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, is a playful yet thought-provoking celebration of this genre that is both familiar and not. In a series of essays, the contributors—anthropologists, art and architectural historians, and architectural theorists—consider the ubiquitous contemporary apartment, the void we inhabit with its standard measurements that reflect contemporary architecture’s key constraints. A striking visual journey, House Tour takes as its starting point almost three hundred photographs of such unfurnished interiors designed by leading Swiss architecture firms.

Architecture builds upon history. Even the avant-gardist creed to “make it new” still assumes a past. It is impossible to imagine novelty without an awareness of what existed before. Summary:
Architecture builds upon history. Even the avant-gardist creed to “make it new” still assumes a past. It is impossible to imagine novelty without an awareness of what existed before. This is even more true for the reuse and appropriation of existing structures, where designers take a stance relative to the past. In their transformation projects the office of diederendirrix architects retell stories of buildings and sites – by paraphrasing part of the story, by recasting central actors, by making architecture speak in other words. In so doing, they make it anew.

Summary:
Space, place and territory are concepts that lie at the core of geography and urban planning, environmental studies and sociology. Although space, place and territory are indeed polysemic and polemic, they have particular characteristics that distinguish them from each other. They are interdependent but not interchangeable, and the differences between them explain how we simultaneously perceive, conceive and design multiple spatialities. After drawing the conceptual framework of space, place and territory, the book explores how we sense space in the most visceral ways, and how the overlay of meanings attached to the sensorial characteristics of space change the way we perceive it – smell, spatial experiences using electroence phalography, and the changing meaning of darkness are discussed.
