Summary:
Saint-Laurent boulevard, a major thoroughfare crossing the heart of Montreal from north to south, has witnessed more than three centuries of history. It has experienced spectacular transformations and reversals, incarnating in turn every facet of Montreal's character, from rural to urban and from the early days of industrialization to the latest in multimedia. A gateway for immigrants and a window on the world, a haven for marginal Montrealers of every stripe, the "Main" has long served as the melting pot for peoples and cultures in Quebec. Through the vast and far-reaching metamorphoses that have shaped the "Main" since its very beginning, we see Montreal and Quebec as a whole emerge into the modern age. For the busy sidewalks and chaotic intersections of the "Main" gave birth to many of the social movements that have marked our world, from women's liberation to unionization and the fight for human dignity. The "Main" has also attracted an impressive pool of artistic talent and been an testing ground for new forms of expression, including film, Yiddish theater, French song, and Quebec burlesque.

Summary:
Whether it’s horror at the plastic littering the world’s beaches or despair at the melting polar ice caps, the world is gradually waking up to the impending climate disaster. In ''The green imperative,'' Papanek argues for design that addresses these issues head-on. This means using materials that can be recycled and reused, no more pointless packaging, thinking about how products make us feel and engage all our senses, putting nature at the heart of design, working at a smaller scale, rejecting aesthetics for their own sake, and thinking before we buy. First published at the end of the twentieth century, this book offered a plethora of honest advice, clear examples, and withering critiques, laying out the flaws of and opportunities for the design world at that time. A quarter of a century on, Papanek’s lucid prose has lost none of its verve, and the problems he highlights have only become more urgent, giving today’s reader both a fascinating historical perspective on the issues at hand and a blueprint for how they might be solved.

Summary:
In this walking meditation, forest ranger and writer William Tweed takes us to California’s spectacular High Sierra to discover a new vision for american national parks as they approach their 100th anniversary facing dramatic changes. Tweed, who worked among the Sierra Nevada’s big peaks and big trees for more than thirty years, has now hiked more than 200 miles along California’s John Muir Trail in a personal search for answers : How do we address the climate change we are seeing even now — in melting glaciers in Glacier National Park, changing rainy seasons on Mt Rainer, and more fire in the West’s iconic parks. Should we intervene where we can to preserve biodiversity? Should the parks merely become ecosystem museums that exhibit famous landscapes and species? Tweed weaves his experiences along this high-altitude trail together with reflections on the people and ideas that created the parks and on their status and meaning today. Asking how we can make these magnificent parks relevant for the next generation, Tweed’s journey ultimately shows why we must do just that.

Summary:
Award-winning documentary maker John Paskievich has made his name making films about places and people throughout the world. His films made for the National Film Board have chronicled groups as different as young Czechs trying to be North American Indians, the impoverished Roma community in Slovakia, and an isolated group of Orthodox Russians on the Canadian prairies. As a filmmaker, his work has been shown at film festivals throughout North America and Europe, including the Cannes Film Festival and the Toronto Festival of Festivals. In "The North End", Paskievich returns to his first love, photography. His lyrical black and white photographs chronicle a community closer to home, the iconic Winnipeg neighbourhood in which he grew up. Winnipeg’s North End is the great Canadian melting pot, the place "north of the tracks" that welcomed waves of immigrants from central and eastern Europe at the turn of the last century. It is a place that spawned some of Canada’s greatest cultural events and personalities, from the Winnipeg General Strike to the Guess Who. Paskievich captures the vibrancy and conflicts of the North End and other urban spaces like it, places where history, poverty, and resilience come together.

Summary:
In times where global matters such as the climate, currencies and places of residence become increasingly volatile, the urban public space we live in is an area where power, identity and belonging are negotiated. Cities have always been melting pots of history, society, art and politics, which is why the way a city is shaped tells us a lot about the people who live in it. With contributors from a variety of fields, Ethics of the Urban discusses these urban spaces of the political. "How do we move about the city?", "How does memory of the past inspire the future of cities?" and "What makes a city a home?" are only some of the many questions that Ethics of the Urban addresses. The publication gathers experts from history, sociology, art, political theory, planning, law and design to emphasize the complexity of the meaning that urban space has today. Urban spaces are on one hand political spaces, since buildings, streets and people moving around all mirror political decisions in one way or another. On the other hand, the urban space is also a designed space, conceptualized, planned and sometimes gentrified. Complimented by stunning photography, Ethics of the Urban is a vibrant intellectual journey straight into the bone marrow of every contemporary city around the globe.

Summary:
We are living in the Anthropocene—an era of dramatic and violent climate change featuring warming oceans, melting icecaps, extreme weather events, habitat loss, species extinction, and more. What will life be like in a climate-changed world? In ''Tomorrow’s parties,'' science fiction authors speculate how we might be able to live and even thrive through the advancing Anthropocene. In ten original stories by writers from around the world, an interview with celebrated writer Kim Stanley Robinson, and a series of intricate and elegant artworks by Sean Bodley, ''Tomorrow’s parties'' takes rational optimism as a moral imperative, or at least a pragmatic alternative to despair. In these stories—by writers from the United Kingdom, the United States, Nigeria, China, Bangladesh, and Australia—a young man steals from delivery drones; a political community lives on an island made of ocean-borne plastic waste; and a climate change denier tries to unmask ''crisis actors.'' Climate-changed life also has its pleasures and epiphanies, as when a father in Africa works to make his son’s dreams of ''Viking adventure'' a reality, and an IT professional dispatched to a distant village encounters a marvelous predigital fungal network. Contributors include Pascall Prize for Criticism winner James Bradley, Hugo Award winners Greg Egan and Sarah Gailey, Philip K Dick Award winner Meg Elison, and New York Times bestselling author Daryl Gregory.
