In 'In Praise of the Bicycle', Augé takes us on a personal journey of his own, on a two-wheeled ride around our cities, and on a journey into ourselves. We all remember the thrill of riding a bike for the first time and the joys of cycling. Here he reminds us that these memories are not just personal, but rooted in a time and a place, in a history that is shared with millions of others. Part memoir, part manifesto, Augé celebrates cycling as a way of reconnecting with the places in which we live, and, ultimately, as a necessary alternative to our disconnected world.

"I Hate the Lake District" offers a different vision of the rural environment from those found in much contemporary nature writing. Based on the author's trips around North West England, the book engages with nuclear power and nuclear war, slavery, imperialism, ghosts, love, God, cockroaches, and the sheer violence and contingency of “nature” itself—of which the human presence is merely a part. Each chapter starts with an account of a visit to a place in this remote part of England, the deep north, but digresses and wanders through multifarious themes and subjects.

Summary:

Summary:
This book examines the origins of psychogeography in the Paris of the 1950s, exploring the theoretical background and its political application in the work of Guy Debord and the Situationists. ''Psychogeography'' continues to find retrospective validation in much earlier traditions, from the visionary writing of William Blake and Thomas De Quincey to the rise of the flâneur and the avant-garde experimentation of the Surrealists. These precursors to psychogeography are discussed here alongside their modern counterparts, for today these ideas hold greater currency than ever through the popularity of writers and filmmakers such as Iain Sinclair, Will Self and Patrick Keiller.

Summary:
We now have the technology to reach nearby planets. Even though many long-term technical issues still need to be resolved to create the conditions for a permanent, self-sustaining human life on another planet, imagining humans as a multiplanetary species is no longer merely the stuff of science fiction. Against this backdrop, "Planetary Echoes" considers the place of this dream of human life on other planets in the arts, literature and sciences at the beginning of the 21st century. In this volume, a broad, interdisciplinary list of contributors (scientists, astronauts, designers, philanthropists, inventors, artists and curators) weighs in on the imaginable possibilities of space settlement. The list of contributors ranges from Buzz Aldrin to Richard Branson to Norman Foster, with many more perspectives on offer a list eclectic enough to match the eccentricity of the human dream of colonizing outer space.

Summary:
From the famed Atlantis to the remote Rupes Nigra, islands have long held our fascination: they are locales isolated from ordinary life, lurking in unexplored corners of the globe and thus full of undisclosed mysteries. At times, however, our fascination with islands has bled into reality, as real maps bear the coordinates of fictional lands and travelogues tell tall tales of their inhabitants, their natural wonders, or their treasures. In ''Phantom islands,'' Dirk Liesemer tells the stories of thirty of these fantastical islands. Beginning with their supposed discovery, he recreates their fabled landscapes, the voyages that attempted to verify their existence, and, ultimately, the moment when their existence was finally disproven. Spanning oceans and centuries, these curious tales are a chronicle of human lust for discovery and wealth.
