As building materials and technologies advance, architects are creating new kinds of urban environments. Among the innovations showcased in this book that are contributing to new architectural forms are parametric modeling enabled by computer-aided technology, environmentally friendly building skins, and HOPSCAs - a hybrid building type - that can house hotels, offices, parking, shopping, a convention center, and apartments under one roof. Summary:
The Modernist house was a test of modern architects’ ability to meet human needs while fuelling the intellect. "The Modernist home" reveals the striking results of the challenge to fit utopian modernist principles to day-to-day living. The Modernist house dissolved the closed spaces of the traditional home, modernising the bathrooms and kitchens, opening the interior to natural light and providing balconies and terraces for sun-worship and sleeping in the open air. Tim Benton uncovers its elements: from the technology that provided central heating and electric lighting; to new construction materials, such as concrete and steel; to close-ups on features like winter gardens and folding furniture. He opens the door on Modernist houses around the world, from Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, to Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion, all fully illustrated with colour photographs and plans.

Summary:
The birthplace of the skycraper, Chicago is famous for an architectural tradition that has influenced building around the globe. It is the craddle of modern architecture. It gae rise to the urban office building and the flowing, open floor plans of today's homes. This book chronicles Chicago's architectural tradition from the nineteenth through the early twenty-fisrt century : from the structural simplicity of Chicago School commercial building to the low-slung Prairie School house, from the streamlined Art Deco skycraper to the minimalist Miesian tower of glass and steel, all the way through the strikingly original, diverse designs of the present day's so-called second modern period.

Summary:
Located in Mexico City, Tatiana Bilbao Estudio is well known internationally for its use of traditional Mexican construction techniques, the highly sculptural effects of its buildings and its unusually collaborative approach toward each client. Founded by Tatiana Bilbao (born 1972) in 2004, its completed buildings include the Gratitude Open Chapel in La Ruta del Peregrino, Gabriel Orozco's house in Roca Blanca and the botanical garden in Culiacan. The texts by Patrick Charpenel, Simon Hartmann, Raymund Ryan and a conversation with Gonzalo Ortega address Bilbao's uniquely contemporary architectural language, which combines the efficient use of materials, optimal function and an original design with a discreet aesthetic that always conveys a responsiveness toward landscape.
