Summary:

Summary:
"A Moving Border: Alpine Cartographies of Climate Change" builds upon the Italian Limes project by Studio Folder, which was devised in 2014 to survey the fluctuations of the boundary line across the Alps in real time. The book charts the effects of climate change on geopolitical understandings of border and the cartographic methods used to represent them. Locating the Italian condition alongside a longer political history of boundary making, the book brings together critical essays, visualizations, and unpublished documents from state archives. By examining the nexus of nationalism and cartography, "A Moving Border" details how borders are both material and imagined, and the ways global warming challenges Western conceptions of territory. Even more, it provides a blueprint for spatial intervention in a world where ecological processes are bound to dominate geopolitical affairs.

Summary:
Curated by Jennifer Gray, the exhibition ‘Frank Lloyd Wright Between USA and Italy’ at Turin’s Pinacoteca Agnelli is devoted to the drawings and designs of the famous American architect. Wright first visited Italy in 1910; there he would elaborate the ideals of a democratic architecture, closely connected to nature, that inspired his work and that of many Italian architects. In 1935 Edoardo Persico’s thoughts on Wright precipitated a decades-long engagement with the theory of organic architecture and its implications for Italian culture. This exhibition catalogue details the relationship between Wright and Italy, from prairie houses and skyscrapers to public projects.

Pavilion propositions: nine points on an architectural phenomenon

Summary:
This book addresses the contemporary pavilion phenomenon and those often temporary and functionless architectural structures commissioned and exhibited by art institutions around the world (including the annual Serpentine Pavilion in London, Young Architects Program at MoMA PS1 in New York and the MPavilion in Melbourne). Despite its ubiquity and popular success, the contemporary pavilion has been inconsistently theorized and frequently disparaged. In this book, the authors reclaim the pavilion against those that would dismiss the phenomenon as symptomatic of the exhaustion of the critical potential of architecture's intersection with art. The pavilion phenomenon also occasions a timely interrogation of larger questions concerning the changing relations between culture and the economy- changes that are shifting the planes on which architecture and art meet.

Summary:
Works by Renzo Piano are distinguished by a unique interplay of functional, technical and aesthetic aspects. An architect with no recognisable trademark style, Renzo Piano has nevertheless designed some of the most famous buildings in the world: among them the Pompidou Centre, the headquarters of the New York Times, the Shard Tower in London, the Whitney Museum in New York and the recently completed Palace of Justice in Paris. Renowned as a master of construction technology, the Pritzker Prize winner uses a wide variety of materials and construction methods to create buildings whose designs are heavily inspired by location and function. This monograph presents twelve works that were published in the DETAIL magazine in recent years.

As customary, this monograph of publications in DETAIL by the David Chipperfield Architects practice takes a closer look behind the scenes, describes processes and shows above all: many construction details.

Summary:
The fall of the Berlin Wall, symbol of the bipolar order that emerged after World War II, seemed to inaugurate an age of ever fewer borders. The liberalization and integration of markets, the creation of vast free-trade zones, the birth of a new political and monetary union in Europe—all seemed to point in that direction. Only thirty years later, the tendency appears to be quite the opposite. Talk of a wall with Mexico is only one sign among many that boundaries and borders are being revisited, expanding in number, and being reintroduced where they had virtually been abolished. Is this an out-of-step, deceptive last gasp of national sovereignty or the victory of the weight of history over the power of place?

Summary:
In the wake of World War I, an international movement arose which aimed to protect architectural monuments in large numbers, and regardless of style, hoping not only to keep them safe from future conflicts, but also to make them worthy of protection from more quotidian forms of destruction. Examining key episodes in the history of this preservation effort, Lucia Allais demonstrates how the group deployed the notion of culture to shape architectural sites, and how architecture in turn shaped the very idea of global culture.
