Summary:
This book examines forty projects representing the exemplary work of the internationally renowned architecture firm KSP Engel and Zimmermann. In the course of the past several years, KSP Engel and Zimmermann has become one of the most successful architecture firms in Germany. The firm now has offices in Berlin, Braunschweig, Frankfurt, Cologne, and Munich. Its projects include office buildings, hospitals, schools, libraries, sports facilities and residential architecture. KSP Engel and Zimmermann's rich architectural language covers a broad spectrum-from sensitive intervention in existing structures to striking high-rise buildings. This book features an interview in which the two architects clarify their approach to architecture, their curiosity about building abroad, and their recent success. Essays by Peter Davey, editor-in-chief of Architectural Review, and Ingeborg Flagge, director of the Deutsches Architektur Museum, provide a portrait of these self-assured yet open-minded and highly pragmatic architects. The book illustrates the firm's architectural and planning competence in a presentation of forty different projects, including the Federal Press Office in Berlin, the Trade Fair Forum in Frankfurt, Volkswagen Hall in Braunschweig, the Bertelsmann Foundation building in Gütersloh, and a number of high-rise projects in Frankfurt.

Summary:
Ortlos is German for "placeless." It is also the appropriate designation for a virtual architectural office and discussion forum dealing with experimental architecture, urban planning, media theory, art installations, and product and interface design. Architects, web designers, media theorists, media artists, and information-technology specialists from around the world work together off-site, independent of a specific workplace. The conceptual and design process goes on in collaboration in a trans-local environment, created out of a network of virtually combined workplaces. The architects of ORTLOS characterize the "end of architecture" in a way that is comparable to American graphic-design legend David Carson's radical description of the "end of the print medium." This publication, the result of an unusual creative collaboration between ORTLOS and Carson, presents a dozen projects, dating from 2000 to 2003. With foreword by Thom Mayne.

Summary:
Exhibiting Architecture: A Paradox? a collection of essays that were an outgrowth of the eponymous symposium at the school in fall 2013 was recently published by Yale School of Architecture. The forum was convened by associate professor Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen, David Andrew Tasman and curator Carson Chan. This publication includes essays that explore the difficulties of exhibiting something as large and complex as a building or a city, and how to communicate something as elusive as an architectural experience that unfolds in space and time. It includes essays by Barry Bergdoll, Mari Lending, Romy Golan, Wallis Miller, Simon Sadler, Craig Buckley, among others, and two round table discussions with curators and practitioners.

Summary:
With Neri and Hu Design and Research Office, the Chinese avantgarde in architecture, research and teaching, product and interior design has arrived in Europe. This publication accompanies the exhibition "Reflective Nostalgia" presented at the Aedes Architecture Forum (Berlin), which aimed to highlight the way in which Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu examine the historical and the contemporary as well as the listed and the everyday and to transform them into new uses in a respectful and future-oriented manner. Their transdisciplinary design approach is in the DNA of the studio. The success of the broad spectrum of their work is reflected in numerous international awards. The exhibition installation featured architectural models, photographs and videos, as well as a selection of furniture, showcasing Neri and Hu's alternative reading of historical contexts, including all the contradictions and details, as well as the unexpected spatial compositions with which they respond.

Summary:
"Barcelona 1992-2004" offers a selection of chronologically arranged projects that provide an overview of the period that commences with the 1992 Olympic Games and culminates in the huge cultural event that is the Universal Forum of Cultures-Barcelona 2004. The selection has focused in particular on projects involving the city’s openness to the sea and those which have managed to adapt to its existing residential fabric. Presented as separate chapters are projects for new high-rise buildings and schemes for the 22@ plan and the Universal Forum of Cultures. The selection is preceded by a text by William J. R. Curtis, in which he explains how the development of Barcelona in recent years can be set within policies of a more international kind, followed by an exhaustive urbanistic analysis of the city of Barcelona over the last few decades by Josep Maria Montaner. Photographs by Eva Serrats. With full-colour photographs of the city and plans and illustrations of some of the structures, this volume is a comprehensive guide to Barcelona’s contemporary urban structures.

Summary:
This book is the outgrowth of the Fourth National Forum on Historic Preservation Practice, held at Goucher College in Towson, Maaryland, in March 2004. The papers presented at the conference were chosen from a large number of abstracts sent in response to a widely distributed call. Preservation has traditionally focused on saving prominent buildings of historical or architectural significance. Preserving cultural landscapes-the combined fabric of the natural and man-made environments-is a relatively new and often misunderstood idea among preservationists, but it is of increasing importance. The essays collected in this volume-case studies that include the Little Tokyo neighborhood in Los Angeles, the Cross Bronx Expressway, and a rural island in Puget Sound-underscore how this approach can be fruitfully applied. Together, they make clear that a cultural landscape perspective can be an essential underpinning for all historic preservation projects.
