Summary:
Landscape and Energy discusses and pictures the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy-easily one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century. While explaining the driving forces behind the exponential growth of our energy use, this volume also visually compares the spatial footprints of all relevant energy sources, allowing its readers to see at a glance the importance of renewable energy for our world's future. But even as Landscape and Energy acknowledges the breathtaking task that lies ahead for our designers, planners and politicians, it elaborates the options and choices for an emerging "postfossil landscape" through a variety of case studies.

Summary:
Is the idea of environment in architecture only ever reducible to 'environmental architecture'? For Ricardo de Ostos and Nanette Jackowski, tutors of Intermediate Unit 3 at the Architectural Association, the answer is a resolute no. Instead they offer an alternative reading of 'environment', in which the brutal and lyrical are juxtaposed through visually compelling narratives of architecture. Illustrating their apporach, this book presents ten years of student projects, all prompted by the unit's visits to extreme geographical contexts - from the rainforests of Brazil to the quarries of northern India. With additional photographic documentation and conversations with Lebbeus Woods, Geoff Manaugh and Peter Cook, Scavengers & Other Creatures in Promised Lands explores the gripping power of myth and fiction as radial narratives for imagining the near future of cities and forests.

The book pulls together a collection of utterly unique and singular worlds that together argue for a positioning of architecture: not geographically, but rather set within its rich cultural context shaped by real histories and imagined futures. Ultimately, Little Worlds addresses a question all architects face at the beginning of their bright futures - how to shape an identity.

It takes as its starting point Jules Verne’s novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, with the Nautilus submarine and its captain Nemo – inventor, explorer, oceanologist, gastronome, musician and terrorist. The undersea is examined as a zone created both by exploration and invention, from the earliest attempts to photograph and descend into the depths with deep-sea devices, through the 1960s experiments and actual inhabitation, such as the US Sealab and Cousteau’s Conshelf, to contemporary surveillance of the rapidly changing oceans.

Summary:
Architecture is a strange mixture of persistence and flux, an amalgamation of elements - some that have been around for over 5,000 years and others that were (re)invented yesterday. The fact that these elements change independently of each other, according to different cycles and economies, and for different reasons, turns each building into a complex collage of the archaic and the current, the site-specific and the standard, mechanical smoothness and the spontaneous. Only by looking at the elements under a wide lens can we recognize the cultural preferences, forgotten symbolism, technological advances, mutations triggered by intensifying global exchange, climatic adaptions, political calculations, regulatory requirements, new digital regimes, and, somewhere in the mix - the ideas of the architect that constitute the practice of architecture today. A collection of these essential elements into 15 books in a package launched at the 2014 Venice Biennale that allows us to look through a microscope at the real fundamentals of our buildings and see again the essential design techniques used by any architect, anywhere, anytime.
