Summary:
Architecture Without Content is architecture reduced to its very perimeter. The books in the series are the outcome of studios offered at EPFL. Architecture Without Content 15 emerged from the Roman Architecture studio trip to the Veneto- we were looking for an architecture that we felt we could only discover in the tangible reality as found, opposed to the monumental photographs we know all too well. Stefano Graziano, our compagnon de route, was looking for something similar, as if he was pursuing a parallel project of re-appropriation, making a new set of photographs depicting another Palladio. Neon Palladio is a collection of overviews and details, fragments and relations. It is equally Palladio and Scamozzi and Sansovino.

Summary:
Working from an architect’s perspective, Eisenman, with Matt Roman, shows the evolution of Palladio’s villas from those that exhibit classical symmetrical volumetric bodies to others that exhibit no bodies at all, just fragments in a landscape. This conclusion stands in stark contrast to studies that emphasize principles of ideal symmetry and proportion in Palladio’s work. Featuring more than 300 new analytic drawings and models, this book is an important addition to the corpus of Palladian studies and a testament to Palladio’s lasting place in contemporary architectural thought.

Summary:
Andrea Palladio published two enormously popular guides to the churches and antiquities of Rome in 1554. Striving to be both scholarly and popular, Palladio invited his Renaissance readers to discover the charm of Rome’s ancient and medieval wonders, and to follow pilgrimage routes leading from one church to the next. He also described ancient Roman rituals of birth, marriage, and death. Here translated into English and joined in a single volume, Palladio’s guidebooks allow modern visitors to enjoy Rome exactly as their predecessors did 450 years ago. Enhanced with illustrations and commentary, the book also includes the first full English translation of Raphael’s letter to Pope Leo X on the monuments of ancient Rome. For architectural historians, tourists, and armchair travelers, this book offers insights into the antiquarian and ecclesiastical preoccupations of one of the Renaissance architectural masters.
