Glasgow-based artist Phil Collins' film Soy Mi Madre examines the immigrant populations of Colorado's Roaring Fork Valley, a sizable percentage of which hail from northwestern Mexico. The region relies heavily on service and maintenance work provided largely through this population, who often commute to work in Aspen. Loosely inspired by Jean Genet's The Maids--a seminal example of Theatre of the Absurd that renders surreal the intricate power dynamics that exist between people of divergent socioeconomic groups and exploits the volatility of social identity--Soy Mi Madre portrays the social realities of this region through the melodramatic lens of the telenovela.

Summary:
On an almost daily basis, Andy Goldsworthy makes art using the materials and conditions he encounters wherever he is, be it the land around his Scottish home, the mountain regions of France or Spain, or the sidewalks of New York City, Glasgow, or Rio de Janeiro. Out of earth, rocks, leaves, ice, snow, rain, sunlight, and shadow he creates works that exist briefly before they are altered and erased by natural processes. They are documented in his photographs, and their larger meanings are bound up with the forces that they embody: materiality, temporality, growth, vitality, permanence, decay, chance, labor, and memory.

Summary:
Charles Rennie Mackintosh was one of Scotland’s greatest architect. He had far fewer commissions than his contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright, but with a few bold and innovative structures — the Glasgow School of Art and Hill House among them —he had a profound influence on art and architecture at the turn of the twentieth century. Like Wright, Mackintosh designed in totality, down to the furniture and fabrics used in his structures, and he was influenced by the Japanese, particularly in the simplicity of his designs and themes from nature. This publication contains both historic photographs and modern images of Mackintosh’s major works taken by architectural photographer Mark Fiennes.

Summary:
The Scottish architect, designer and painter Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) was one of the early pioneers of modern architecture and design. His multifaceted œuvre is an important link between the movement towards artistic reform in Britain and continental Modernism. Mackintosh’s avant-garde designs for the Glasgow school of art, the legendary Willow tea rooms or the Hill house in Helensburgh are a blend of functional simplicity and poetic decorative details. The result is a cool elegance which combines "mysticism and aestheticism with a strong touch of lilac ... and a gentle sensuality". In addition to his architectural works, this book focuses on Mackintosh’s famous interiors and also on his often neglected textile designs and watercolours.

Summary:
Steven Holl celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of his landmark book "Anchoring with Compression," a collection of thirty-five major projects from the past decade. Holl applies concepts from neuroscience, literature, social science, and philosophy to develop the idea of compression: the condensation of material and social forces to create meaningful and sustainable architecture. A diverse roster of international works includes an expansion of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston ; academic facilities for Columbia University, Princeton University, and the Glasgow School of Art; urban plans; a harbor gateway for Copenhagen; and an extension of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. All demonstrate Holl's poetic attention to light, space, and water; a subtle and tactile employment of material and color; and an awareness of architecture's potential to connect people through inspiring public spaces.

Summary:
This fictional work about the construction and decay of a late modernist building can also be read as an essay on our contemporary unease with modernism in general. Author Brian Dillon, UK editor of Cabinet magazine, based it on research into St. Peter's Seminary, a college complex commissioned by the Catholic Church in the 1950s, completed in 1968, and abandoned by 1980. On the outskirts of Glasgow - itself a city with a vexed relationship to Le Corbusier-esque modernism - the building is rich with histories: of its architects, its residing student priests, the drug addicts it once housed and treated, and the local teenagers for whom it is a kind of Gothic recreation center. This book takes the material remains of modernism and treats them from a literary point of view.
