Summary:
'Fragments of Repair' is the fourth publication in BAK’s publishing series BASICS which revisits fundamental questions and urgencies of our time—the “basics”—and seeks to develop afresh the building blocks of lexicons, tactics, scenarios, and relations that enable action in contemporary conditions. Today’s entwined crises reveal deep-seated wounds that issue from historical colonialisms and present-day authoritarianisms, economic disparity and growing racial violence, and the abuses inflicted on vulnerable populations and the planet. To address this disquieting chaos, this book, co-conceptualized by artist Kader Attia with curators Maria Hlavajova and Wietske Maas, offers a collection of long- and short-form essays, visual essays, and conversations on decolonial repair as both a tool and a tactic of engagement with the current state of the world.

Summary:
In this publication, Caterina Albano examines the cultural significance of breath and air to a wide array of forces in our midst, including economy, politics, infection, and ecological violence. Through a consideration of recent art practices and projects, including the dance project Breath Catalogue, which makes visible the breathing patterns of dancers, and Forensic Architecture’s Cloud Studies video, which investigates eight different kinds of clouds from airstrikes to herbicides to tear gas, Albano focuses on breath as both an intuitive process and a conveyer of meanings. Conceived in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and systemic inequalities that it has laid bare, the book shows the potential of artistic practices to mobilize affect as a form of cultural and political critique.

Summary:
Our times of crumbling structures and decaying social bonds are often depicted as apocalyptic. This book takes the apocalypse as a metaphor to help us in the search for meaning in our everyday realities. Yes, the apocalypse is when social structures and institutions fall apart and we are terrified and suffocated by the debris raining down upon us. But 'apocalypse' also means 'revelation'. The very collapse reveals what dissipating institutions were constructed upon: where there ought to have been foundational common values, most often there is violence and raw power. Yet the values are there, too, and they can be found. This book is a guide to these values, showing how they can be of help to organizers and organizational dreamers.

Summary:
Riots are extraordinary events that have been recurring with increasing frequency and occupy a highly controversial space in the political imagination. Despite their often negative portrayals, it is undeniable that riots have played a pivotal role in the confrontation between authority and dissent. Recently, with the deepening crises of capitalism, racial violence, and communal tension, an 'age of riots' has powerfully begun. As master fictions of the sovereign nation-state implode, and the hegemonic silencing of the dispossessed reveals the cracks in governability, 'Nights of the Dispossessed: Riots Unbound' brings together artistic works, political texts, critical urban analyses, and research projects from across the world in an endeavor to 'sense,' chronicle, and think through recent riots and uprisings - evoking a phenomenology of the multitude and surplus population.

Summary:

Summary:
In Recollections of My Nonexistence, Rebecca Solnit describes her formation as a writer and as a feminist in 1980s San Francisco, in an atmosphere of gender violence on the street and throughout society and the exclusion of women from cultural arenas. She tells of being poor, hopeful, and adrift in the city that became her great teacher, and of the small apartment that, when she was nineteen, became the home in which she transformed herself. She explores the forces that liberated her as a person and as a writer–books themselves; the gay community that presented a new model of what else gender, family, and joy could mean; and her eventual arrival in the spacious landscapes and overlooked conflicts of the American West.

Summary:
When art takes its inspiration from correctional facilities. This book is the result of an international collective project in which the artists were asked to reflect on the architecture of seclusion, in search of different ways of documenting the institutional spaces intended to punish and, at times, to improve the individuals by their separation from the rest of society. Prisons, mental hospitals, and other corrective institutions are constantly developing—ideologically, structurally, and architecturally—enclosing entire stories of violence and resistance. But how is a confinement space conceived? How can it be reported? The artists reflect on places of constriction, correction, and isolation whose functional mechanisms remain behind the visible, aided by a space-time line that separates them from the life outside.

Summary:
Now in a new edition with updated statistics, texts and other materials, ''Handbook of tyranny'' portrays the routine cruelties of the 21st century through a series of detailed nonfictional graphic illustrations. None of these cruelties represent extraordinary violence?they reflect day-to-day implementation of laws and regulations around the globe. Every page of the book questions our current world of walls and fences, police tactics and prison cells, crowd control and refugee camps. The dry and factual style of storytelling through technical drawings is the graphic equivalent of bureaucratic rigidity, just as the detailed illustrations mirror the repressive efforts of global authorities. The 21st century shows a general striving for an ever-more-regulated and protected society. ''Handbook of tyranny'' gives a profound insight into the relationship between political power, territoriality and systematic cruelties.
