Summary:
Bruther (Stéphanie Bru and Alexandre Theriot) emerged from a frugal France that, after the Great Recession, was demanding in its approaches and austere in its means. The distinctiveness of their buildings has remained unchanged, largely thanks to exposed installations, ingenious furniture, and sparse use of colour textiles. Bruther combines culture and technique, without compromising its environmental awareness. This issue features fifteen works, from an early proposal for a low-carbon house, through key works such as the multipurpose buildings in Saint-Blaise and Caen and the residences in Paris and Palaiseau, and culminating with their latest projects, like Frame media centre in Brussels.

Summary:
This book explores the increasing use of experimental interactive design in our living and working environments. Responsive environments - by definition spaces that interact with the people who use them or pass through them - have in a very short space of time become ubiquitous. From an installation in a London shopping centre that registers the presence of passers-by with patterns of coloured light and sound, to an interactive artwork in the boardroom of the TV channel Five, the projects featured in this book engage with our wishes and bodily sensations, fusing inventive design with interactive media and technologies.

Summary:
This monograph of French illustrator and cartoonist Jochen Gerner follows a research and thought process concerning the connections between text and image, typography and line, and includes numerous examples of his work. In his drawing practice, Gerner creates visual narrative projects, such as illustrated books and experimental comics, as well as drawings for the world of publishing and print media. Since the early 2000s, he has investigated printed images through graphic means: a hijacking process using ink and paint that allows a method of reframing or erasing. The book includes texts by Christophe Gallois and an interview with Gerner by Tom McCarthy.

Summary:
Karl Nawrot is a graphic designer whose work has a pronounced architectural sensibility. His oeuvre includes typography, illustration, and abstract graphic compositions, and he uses techniques usually associated with architectural processes to create letterforms drawn using various media. ‘Mind Walks’ compiles more than 900 images of Nawrot’s selected works from between 2004 and 2017. Edited and designed by him, and with a text by James Langdon, the book is a fascinating compendium of plastic expression through various materials. Whether formed in pencil, ink, foam board, card stock, or metal, his creations are the typographic equivalent of an architectural model.

Summary:
Archives have become a nexus in the wake of the digital turn. Electronic files, search engines, video sites, and media player libraries make the concepts of “archival” and “retrieval” practically synonymous with the experience of interconnected computing. Archives today are the center of much attention but few agendas. Can archives inform the redistribution of power and resources when the concept of the public library as an institution makes knowledge and culture accessible to all members of society regardless of social or economic status? This book sets out to show that archives need our active support and continuing engagement.

Summary:
The Pattern and Decoration movement emerged in the 1970s as an embrace of long-dismissed art forms associated with the decorative. Pioneering artists such as Miriam Schapiro, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, and others appropriated patterns, frequently from non-Western decorative arts, to produce intricate, often dizzying or gaudy designs in media ranging from painting, sculpture, and collage to ceramics, installation art, and performance. This book showcases works by more than 40 artists from across the United States, examining the movement’s defiant adoption of art forms traditionally viewed as feminine, craft-based, or otherwise inferior to fine art.

The people and things we want feel very far away. Everything else feels far too near. Daily life is incorrectly calibrated. This is causing many of us to simply withdraw from the public sphere, wandering off into our own private worlds. Those who remain are struggling to maintain the illusion of critical mass. In reality, politics, culture, commerce and social media have all lost heir drive, falling forward on inertia alone. Everyone wants the same thing. We all crave spaciousness. We all feel too close, without any closeness. This issue of “Real Review” is dedicated to the paradoxical sensation of “absolute proximity”.

With the help of the neologism ''resortization,'' this issue discusses the structural transformation currently underway in the domain of art, which compels it to resemble a resort-like environment. In particular, this term encapsulates the tendency of various Blue-Chip Galleries to follow their well-to-do clientele into the reclusion of exclusive luxury enclaves such as Aspen, Saint-Tropez or Monte-Carlo. The issue also engages with the increasing relevance of digital media, which not only plays a growing part in informing processes of recognition but fundamentally influences the conditions under which artistic work is made and experienced.

Rising stars in Boston's design scene, architects Eric Höweler and J. Meejin Yoon have in a single decade developed a reputation for radical experiments in architectural form. The projects, divided into distinct but often overlapping research themes, include a museum courtyard program inspired by the Voronoi cell-packing algorithm (PS1 Loop); an outdoor light installation featuring hovering cones that capture and interact with solar energy, rainwater, and sound (Hover), etc.

Taken together, the photographs in this book represent a visual commentary on our present-day lifestyle. All the pictures were taken in the centre of Berlin - but the same scenes can be seen all over the world. The buildings are just as interchangeable as the monumental images of sex and consumerism. Stefan Koppelkamm's photographs are accompanied by selected monologues from Roland Schimmelpfennig's drama Push Up 1-3, which give the ideal inhabitants of this world a voice. These are people who fully subscribe to the images of success and beauty taken from adverts and from the media.
