Summary:

Summary:

In this second edition the objective was to select an area of the city of Montreal and invite artists to use it as a space for research and creation for the entire summer of 2004. Thus Montreal's Mont Royal park, and specifically the Olmsted Path which crosses it, were chosen for their significant features, rich histories and public affection. Participating artists include Raymond Gervais, Michel Goulet, Daniel Olson and Alan Storey. An essay is accompanied by texts on each individual work as well as an introduction to the event.

Summary:
Nearly half a century after its inception, the city of Brasilia, designed by Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, and based on Le Corbusier's plans, continues to be one of the world's most widely debated architectural projects. Envisioned as an egalitarian, harmonically conceived environment, the city was designed to foster collectivity and integration. Central to this effort was the idea of the "Superquadra," large neighbourhoods, each with their own schools, shopping, and entertainment complexes. The latest volume in the CASE series, published in collaboration with Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, takes a new look at the Superquadra as a utopian concept, analyzing both its strengths and weaknesses. It features a rare interview with planner Lucio Costa as well as essays exploring the historical and cultural contexts of Brasilia, day-to-day life in the city, and its technical complexities and realities.

Summary:
The recent works of the acclaimed Swiss architect are presented in this monograph on his world-renowned work and previously unpublished plans. Mario Botta's buildings are characterized by simple, geometric shapes that juxtapose lightness and weight. This richly illustrated monograph examines Botta's most recent examples on this theme, as seen in the Kyobo Tower in Seoul, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Jean Tinguely Museum in Basel, and the Cymbalista Synagogue in Tel Aviv. Hundreds of photographs, sketches, and plans illustrate the architect's desire to create structures that adhere to and complement their locations, and show how his choice of materials emphasizes craftsmanship and geometric order. Botta's finished buildings are examined alongside plans which never saw completion, demonstrating the extraordinary creative process of this modern visionary.

Summary:
An architectural view of one of the world's most dynamic and exciting cities. Shanghai's explosive development since the early 1990s has provided students and fans of architecture with myriad examples of superlatives: from the world's tallest buildings to its longest bridges. As timely as it is comprehensive, this collection of essays confronts the broader concerns of Shanghai's role as a harbinger of China's future and a global testing ground. The essays cover the socio-political, cultural, and historic aspects of the city as well as offer more pointed topical analyses of urban design, preservation, and the developments of the city's waterfronts. Throughout the book, color photographs and illustrations examine thirty ongoing and completed projects. The resulting overview presents a vibrant city of tension and contradiction, one that both mirrors and drives China's struggle to break free from economic constraints while adhering to its political ideals.
