Summary:
This book asks you to do the opposite of what you have been taught. A place to let loose, to trash, to spew, to do the things you are not allowed. The only three rules you'll find in this book: 1. Do not try to make something beautiful. 2. Do not think too much. (There is no "wrong.") 3. Continue under all circumstances.

Summary:
Discard studies is an emerging field that looks at waste and wasting broadly construed. Rather than focusing on waste and trash as the primary objects of study, discard studies looks at wider systems of waste and wasting to explore how some materials, practices, regions, and people are valued or devalued, becoming dominant or disposable. In this book, Max Liboiron and Josh Lepawsky argue that social, political, and economic systems maintain power by discarding certain people, places, and things. They show how the theories and methods of discard studies can be applied in a variety of cases, many of which do not involve waste, trash, or pollution. Liboiron and Lepawsky consider the partiality of knowledge and offer a theory of scale, exploring the myth that most waste is municipal solid waste produced by consumers; discuss peripheries, centers, and power, using content moderation as an example of how dominant systems find ways to discard; and use theories of difference to show that universalism, stereotypes, and inclusion all have politics of discard and even purification—as exemplified in ''inclusive'' efforts to broaden the Black Lives Matter movement. Finally, they develop a theory of change by considering ''wasting well,'' outlining techniques, methods, and propositions for a justice-oriented discard studies that keeps power in view.

Street art is a phenomenon which exists across the world's urban centers. What was once regarded as a nuisance at best or vandalism at worst, is now increasingly being recognized as an important art form. This book brings together the finest examples of street art in Berlin, a city bursting with artistic energy and expression. Working primarily at night, street artists leave their messages on building facades, mailboxes, advertisements, traffic signs and trash bins. The author has spent many years photographing street art before it is erased by the authorities and he collects here the best work of the city's preeminent street artists.

Summary:
In this project, graphic designers Jamie Yeo and Gideon Kong obsessively observe and photograph minor urban occurrences in Singapore which possibly challenge popular ideas about the city being “clean and green” or inauthentic. The images reveal creative forms of appropriation (or resistance) that indirectly critique top-down design implementations or suggest other micro-possibilities of use. In this instalment, plants are the focus. Whether growing wild or carefully tended, vegetation in the city is often taken for granted. Here we see them serve dual functions as drying racks, shoe hangers, trash receptacles, and seasonal holiday decorations.

Summary:
Under the unforgiving sun of southern California's Colorado Desert lies Slab City, a community of squatters, artists, snowbirds, migrants, survivalists, and homeless people. Called by some “the last free place” and by others “an enclave of anarchy,” Slab City is also the end of the road for many. Without official electricity, running water, sewers, or trash pickup, Slab City dwellers also live without law enforcement, taxation, or administration. Built on the concrete slabs of Camp Dunlap, an abandoned Marine training base, the settlement maintains its off-grid aspirations within the site's residual military perimeters and gridded street layout; off-grid is really in-grid. In this book, architect Charlie Hailey and photographer Donovan Wylie explore the contradictions of Slab City.
