Summary:
Informing the designs of architects as diverse as Peter Zumthor, Steven Holl, Hans Scharoun and Colin St. John Wilson, the work of Martin Heidegger has proved of great interest to architects and architectural theorists. The first introduction to Heidegger’s philosophy written specifically for architects and students of architecture introduces key themes in his thinking, which has proved highly influential among architects as well as architectural historians and theorists. This guide familiarizes readers with significant texts and helps to decodes terms as well as providing quick referencing for further reading. This concise introduction is ideal for students of architecture in design studio at all levels; students of architecture pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses in architectural theory; academics and interested architectural practitioners. Heidegger for Architects is the second book in the new Thinkers for Architects series.

Summary:
This book is a timely portrait of the work of an architect who expanded the vocabulary of modern architecture. Eero Saarinen and Balthazar Korab constitute a unique team in the history of architecture: Saarinen, the mid-twentieth-century architect who challenged the architectural conventions of his time, and Korab, an architect in Saarinen's office whose perceptive photographs reveal the brilliance of Saarinen's work. This visual sourcebook illustrates nineteen Saarinen commissions in photographs drawn from Korab's archive, providing multiple views of the buildings themselves as well as views of their construction and of architectural models that were critical to their design. Images of Saarinen's office and home provide personal ambience, and an introductory essay positions Saarinen's work within the broader context of his time. Seen in detail, such earlier work as the General Motors Technical Center (1948-56) or the Miller house (1953-57) show departures from orthodox modernism. Saarinen's assured handling of new materials and new building functions impart lasting value to his work, as exemplified by the iconic Trans World Airlines Terminal (1956-62) and Dulles International Airport (1958-63).

Summary:
The facade plays a critical role in the conception of energy- and climate-optimized buildings: it is the building’s skin and functions as an interface between interior and exterior space. It provides thermal and sound insulation and ventilation, and controls and guides the entrance of daylight into the building. Climate Skin offers concrete planning advice for architects and engineers who wish to exploit not only the architectural potential of facades but also their energy and climate-control possibilities, treating the building envelope as an essential component within a complete climate-control and technology solution. It provides a solid foundation of knowledge that equips the reader to make competent technical and economic evaluations of building envelopes. For everyone concerned with facades, Climate Skin is a comprehensive planning handbook and reference work that covers all of the relevant technical and physical aspects of the design and detailed planning of energy-efficient facades.

Summary:
The vast majority of architects cut their teeth designing small-scale additions to private homes. Extensions can be added to roofs, gardens, and underneath buildings or can even be strapped on to the sides. Following a brief introduction, the book is divided into chapters featuring 40 projects that extend spaces up, down, to the rear, to the side, on the roof, internally, and outdoors. Each case study explains how the architects faced design challenges at the same time as meeting their clients' needs. Details covered include choice of materials, planning issues, time, and cost. The book also raises issues that clients ought to consider when commissioning an architect to design an extension, from developing a brief to the finished product. At the end of the book there is practical advice for anyone thinking about extending their own property.
