It features realized work such as the Light Building (a travelling museum pavilion) and row houses in Roosendaal (NL) alongside recent plans including those for a youth hostel in the former Nazi resort at Prora in Germany, and the Franz Liszt Concert Hall in Raiding, Austria. It further includes a number of fascinating but unrealized schemes amongst which the winning design 'Living Inbetween' for Europan 5 Rotterdam and the competition entry for the Nam June Paik Museum in Korea. This book is published in conjunction with the award of the Rotterdam-Maaskant Prize for Young Architects 2005 to Oliver Thill. Design by Sophie Bleifuss.

Their buildings are icons whose facades give surprising views inwards. Inside, the space is captured as a formgiving element tantalizing the senses. In this book the reader is taken through the many layers in their work, past competition entries and by way of realized to unrealized projects. Arranged into themes, the book presents texts on skin and patterns, hollows and patios, model studies of the sculptures and silhouettes, cartoons, photos and plans in this overview of the past ten years.

Summary:
Shortly after finishing their studies, Samuel Bünzli and Simon Courvoisier used their talents to master architectural challenges, achieving independent solutions. The restructuring of a residential building, a school, a laboratory building, a project for hotel rooms and a large housing development were architectural milestones. The projects illustrate the precise approach the architects take to their work. The source of their inspiration is the keen analysis of existing constructions, their environment and the programme generated by the construction task. They use these sources to elicit solutions and – almost as a matter of course – always succeed in shaping a piece of city.

Summary:
"Maps of the imagination" takes us on a magic carpet ride over terrain both familiar and exotic. Using the map as metaphor, Peter Turchi considers writing as a combination of exploration and presentation. He compares the way a writer leads a reader through the imaginary world of a story, novel, or poem to the way a mapmaker charts the physical world. "To ask for a map," says Turchi, "is to say, 'Tell me a story.' " The author looks at how mapmakers and writers deal with blank space and the blank page; the conventions they use (both the ones readers recognize and those that often go unnoticed) or consciously disregard; the role of geometry in maps and the parallel role of form in writing; how both maps and writing serve to re-create an individual's view of the world; and the artist's delicate balance of intuition with intention. The ancient Greeks, German globe makers, and British cartographers join forces with the Marx Brothers, NASA, and Roadrunner cartoons to shed light on the strategies of writers as diverse as Sappho, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, Vladimir Nabokov, Italo Calvino, Don DeLillo, and Heather McHugh. A combination of history, critical cartography, personal essay, and practical guide to writing, "Maps of the imagination" is a book for writers, for readers, and for anyone interested in creativity.
