Studio Mumbai is composed of a few architects and nearly a hundred craftsmen– carpenters, masons, plumbers, electricians, and stonecutters– all working full time. Their work is based on a constant dialogue: “In India, a country with a population of 1,2 billion, the majority of construction is carried out without architects, which does not prevent them from being human in the largest sense. This reflection also forms part of one of our work’s most critical aspect…” reveals Bijoy Jain, the founder of Studio Mumbai. The Studio is a human infrastructure of skilled craftsmen and architects who design and build the work directly.

And it tinkers with the weather and spices the air we breathe. Billions of tons of it rise annually into the air--the dust of deserts and forgotten kings mixing with volcanic ash, sea salt, leaf fragments, scales from butterfly wings, shreds of T-shirts, and fireplace soot. Eventually, though, all this dust must settle.

Summary:
In the seventeenth century, a map of the plague suggested a radical idea—that the disease was carried and spread by humans. In the nineteenth century, maps of cholera cases were used to prove its waterborne nature. More recently, maps charting the swine flu pandemic caused worldwide panic and sent shockwaves through the medical community. In Disease Maps, Tom Koch contends that to understand epidemics and their history we need to think about maps of varying scale, from the individual body to shared symptoms evidenced across cities, nations, and the world. Disease Maps begins with a brief review of epidemic mapping today and a detailed example of its power. Koch then traces the early history of medical cartography, including pandemics such as European plague and yellow fever, and the advancements in anatomy, printing, and world atlases that paved the way for their mapping. Moving on to the scourge of the nineteenth century—cholera—Koch considers the many choleras argued into existence by the maps of the day, including a new perspective on John Snow’s science and legacy. Finally, Koch addresses contemporary outbreaks such as AIDS, cancer, and H1N1, and reaches into the future, toward the coming epidemics.

Métro: Design in Motion/ Design en movement covers the history of the Métro from concept to execution, focusing on its architecture, engineering, industrial design, graphic design and art programme. The book documents all of the 68 subway stations across the city of Montréal, part of Dominion Modern’s mandate of recording 20th Century design across Canada. This was an exciting time in Quebec when visionary politicians like Jean Drapeau and Lucien Saulnier led the province in large scale public works projects that captured the imagination. As urbanist Jane Jacobs said at the opening, it was “a subway for human beings.”

Summary:
Norman Foster is a phenomenon - as an architect, but also as an individual. He is responsible for a dozen or more of the most recognizable buildings of the last 30 years. Amongst many other buildings, Norman Foster is responsible for the design of Beijing's new airport, one of the world's largest, for the Rossiya tower in Moscow, in contention to be the tallest skyscraper in Europe until the credit crunch killed it, for one of the towers at Ground Zero in Manhattan, and for a crop of new towers in London. He designed the Reichstag, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banks headquarters in London and China, the new Wembley stadium and the British Museum's new court. Deyan Sudjic's insightful and elegantly written biography charts the remarkable life of one of the world's most influential architectural figures.

Yann L. Popper’s series of drawings (Seven Months in Brazil) features impossible environments. A lemmings is stuck within a square shape, a canvas, a monochrome, or an endless façade, and seems to be facing rampant urbanisation. From a square module, this character casts a critical eye on the lines that oppress him. Will he be able to escape from there?
