"What I was looking for with this house was probably a return to the main principles of modernism. I was trying to look for the very basics of architecture: a simple structure, simple construction methods, and straightforward spatial conditions that would satisfy the needs of our family. The house was a laboratory where I was looking back to where the tradition of(...)

From an essay by Carlos Jimenez: "Since 1983, when work on my house and studio began, the project has undergone a variety of transformations, expansions, assimilations -simply put, it has followed a path of growth and discovery. My proximity to this path's every turn puts me much too close for objective appraisal, yet this position offers an auspicious vantage point from which to reflect on the implications of architecture in one's life. I now gather some observations, memories, and moments, all of which emerge through one biographical detail or another--an inevitable outcome when writing on such a personal work, a work that by its evolving nature is both my first and my most recent project."

Summary:
The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) presents a detailed selection of entries presented during its 1st Advanced Architecture Contest: Self-Sufficient Housing. Created for students and professionals to inspire changes in how new buildings are designed and constructed, the Self-Sufficient competition challenged participants to design a self-sufficient and ecologically oriented dwelling. In the early 20th century, the concept of dwelling was defined as a machine for living," a reference to a new way of understanding the construction of inhabitable spaces that characterized the Machine Age. Today, a century later, we face the challenge of constructing a sustainable or self-sufficient dwelling, a living organism that interacts with its environment, exchanging resources, and which functions as an entirely independent entity. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) has collected a selection of entries presented during its 1st Advanced Architecture Contest: Self-Sufficient Housing.

Summary:
The average lifespan of a house is somewhere around 100 years. During that time it will see many mutations in household make-up and the associated spatial rituals. So designers are faced with the task of giving form to something that is constantly subject to change. Many studies into flexibility focus on the changeable, on movable partitions and variation in the internal layout. The present study takes not the changeable but the permanent as its departure-point. The permanent, meaning the more durable component of the house or building, constitutes the frame within which change can take place. The frame defines the generic space, the space in which change can occur. Design by Piet Gerards.
