Summary:
The two Essen-based photographers Petra Wittmar and Ulrich Deimel have been considered top league German architecture photographers since their participation in the Venice Architecture Biennale in 1996. Their latest chosen task has been a documentary photographic presentation of architecture from the period between the wars in North-Rhine Westphalia. Important master builders such as Dominikus Böhm, Fritz Schupp, Peter Behrens or Bruno Paul created structures in the Rhine-Ruhr area. The mine building Zollverein by Schupp/Kremer at Essen can hardly be matched for its functionalist austerity and aesthetic homogeneity, the elegance of the Disch house by Bruno Paul in Cologne has set standards. The photographers also discovered and payed tribute to a number of unknown master pieces, presenting an assembly of portraits of architecture from this era, with characteristic and often surprising details.

Summary:
"Ghostly ruins" shows the life and death of thirty structures, from transportation depots, factories, and jails to amusement parks, mansions, hotels, and entire towns. Author Harry Skrdla gives a guided tour of these structures at their peak of popularity juxtaposed with their current state. Structures discussed include the infamous Eastern State Penitentiary and Bethlehem Steel factory in Pennsylvania, the Packard Motors Plant and Book-Cadillac Hotel in Detroit, and Philip Johnson's New York State Pavilion from the 1964/65 World's Fair. There is the entire town of Centralia, Pennsylvania, where a trash fire set inside an old mine in 1962 morphed into an underground inferno that incinerated the town from underneath; more than forty years later, the subterranean fire still rages. The town is empty now, just as the many other abandoned places in this chronicle.

Summary:
During their 40-year career, Bernd and Hilla Becher created their own architectural typology as they photographed buildings in a unique style. Basic Forms represents the culmination of their career. Although the subject matter is unglamorous--mine shafts, blast furnaces, cooling towers, water towers, silos, and gas tanks--the Bechers' passion for their work imbues these photographs with beauty and solemnity. The Bechers restricted the conditions of each photograph--taking them early in the morning, on overcast days, so as to eliminate shadow and distribute light evenly. Each image is centered and frontally framed, its parallel lines set on an even plane. There are no human figures, nor are there birds in the sky. The result is a treasury of precisely functional architectural forms, a sublime example of conceptual artistic practices, and a series of "perfect sculptures of a bygone industrial age."

Summary:
When a cousin of mine told me his seven-year old could paint a Picasso, I told him probably, but he couldn't do the back," writes Brazilian conceptual artist Vik Muniz about his Verso project. The series consists of obsessively faithful three-dimensional trompe l'oeil reproductions--using period hardware in a 1:1 scale--of the backs of such iconic works as Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," van Gogh's "Starry Night" and Seurat's "La Grande Jatte," including every scratch, scribble, label, trace of tape and faded pencil notation found on the original. For six years, Muniz worked in partnership with the curatorial and conservation departments of New York's MOMA and Guggenheim museums, the Art Institute of Chicago and a team of craftsman, artists, forgers and technicians to realize this project. Verso also introduces texts by essayist Luc Sante and MOMA curator Eve Respini.

Summary:
"Brakish waters" is the third of three projects to engage the resource industries of Vancouver Island (mining, forestry, and fishing), through contemporary art and writing. Brackish waters mingle the fresh with the salt. Departing from industrial ports and shoreline ecosystems, this publication crosses oceanic worlds of extraction and distribution. It responds to marine environments diffracted by the perspectives of artists, writers, Indigenous Elders, fish and fishers, biologists, citizen scientists, whales, physicists, boat builders, ship workers, sailors, pirates, brittle stars, and other creatures of the deep. Nanaimo Art Gallery is located on Snuneymuxw territory, one block from the city’s harbor, a place that has seen the forced displacement of Snuneymuxw villages, the arrival of precarious mine workers from China, the UK, and Scandinavia, and the World War II internment of Japanese Canadians who ran herring salteries and shipyards there.
