Summary:
Like an organism sitting and breathing on its site in the Chihuahuan desert, the Swan House is a building of organic beauty and hybrid cultural intelligence. Simone Swan has created an architectural and environmental project that re-examines and promotes traditional adobe building while introducing compatible forms, such as the Nubian vault and dome. Swan studied with the great Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy in his Cairo studio and after his death in 1989 adopted his mission of helping house the world’s poor. Simone Swan: Adobe Building is the first book to discuss and illustrate Swan’s architecture while also chronicling one of her annual workshops in Dollens’ first-hand account. Dollens suggests that by biologically analyzing historic adobe we may be able to hybridize its constituents as replacements for current toxic materials, creating new biomimetic, adobe-related building materials suitable for green architecture.

Summary:
"College street -Toronto's renaissance strip" charts the history of a community that is a microcosm of the larger forces that created the diverse culture of today's Canada. Through immigration, College Street has evolved as Canada has evolved and each generation has left its distinctive mark. There were the early Irish immigrants who fled famine in the old country and settled in the area that is now known as Little Italy. There was the Jewish community that began to develop the outdoor market we now know as Kensington. Eventually the Italians came to dominate and give Little Italy its name, though in the 70s the Portuguese made their own indelible impression on the street and continue to be a powerful presence. With a preface by Joe Pantalone and essays by the editors and Giuliana Colalillo; Beatriz Hausner; Royson James; Rocco Maragna; Domingos Marques & Manuela Marujo; Richard Menkis & Harold Troper; Gabrielle Scardellato.

"Many foundations" tells the stories of forty churches built in the early days of the province, from the 1880s to the 1930s, from Fort Chipewyan to Cardston. The stories of the people who cleared the land, raised the money and erected the buildings are, in fact, the story of Alberta. Ukrainians, Norweians, Brits, Americans, eastern Canadians and others arrived with very little in the way of worldly goods to begin their new lives, but still managed to find the time, the money and the energy to build their houses of worship. "Many foundations" tells their stories of good times and hard times, sad times and comical times.

Summary:
A crisp, functionalist approach, attention to detail and dramatic manipulation of space are the key characteristics that launched Eva Jiricna's award-winning architectural career in Britain. Her breakthrough came with the design of a shop for Joseph Ettedgul that so impressed the fashion industry it lead to commissions by other major names such as Joan and David, Esprit and Vidal Sassoon. Out of these projects grew a reputation for interiors, and in particular for Jiricna's signature component, the staircase: filigree constructions of complexity in sparkling steel. This book presents a selection of 39 completed projects and designs, visually documented in 250 photographs. Typologically diverse, these works include shops, apartments, offices and clubs plus a hotel, library, orangery, and railway station. Features an essay by Peter Kratochull and an introduction by Peter Murray. Text in Czech and English.

Itsuro Yoshiba is one of the world's most talented architects and one of few not to be affected by the authoritarian attitudes that came out of the Japanese construction boom during the last half of the 20th Century. They are flexible, in line with his philosophy that all buildings should allow for future modifications, and they create harmony with the surrounding natural environment. Works include: Ikegamisone Yayoi Museum, University of Osaka Conference Hall, Sun Palace Hirakata, Amagasaki Housing, Kema Housing, and more. Text in English / Korean
