Summary:
This monograph on Seattle-based architect Tom Kundig presents five projects, from their early conceptual sketches to their final wrought, intimate details. Kundig's houses reflect a sustained and active collaborative process between designer, craftsmen, and owners, resulting in houses that bring to life the architect's intentions, the materials used, and lines of beauty. Kundig's work is inspired by both the industrial structures with which he grew up in the Pacific Northwest and the craft cultures that are fostered there. His buildings meld industrial sensibilities and materials such as Cor-ten steel and concrete with an intuitive understanding of scale.

Summary:
Among the critical adulation that follows VJAA wherever they build, you'll find words like graceful, beautiful, sublime, quiet, classic, disciplined, and light—all suggesting the kind of alchemy that makes the work of this Minnesota-based firm so highly regarded. The magic they perform—marrying the simple forms of modernism with the rich materials of their sites in a thoughtful framework that encourages social interaction and environmental responsibility—is carefully illustrated and explained in this monograph, which evokes the very qualities that make their work so seductive and compelling. A former furniture maker, principal Vincent James brings the woodworker's appreciation of materials, details, joinery, and structure to the firm's work, which here includes both their award-winning houses such as the Dayton and Type/Variant houses and institutional projects, such as the Minneapolis Rowing Club, Tulane University Center, and St. John's Abbey and Monastery Guesthouse. Along with an introductory essay by Hashim Sarkis, partners Vincent James and Jennifer Yoos provide a captivating and insightful portrait of their talented young firm.

Summary:
In this rapidly globalizing world, any investigation of architecture inevitably leads to considerations of regionalism. But despite its omnipresence in contemporary practice and theory, architectural regionalism remains a fluid concept, its historical development and current influence largely undocumented. This comprehensive reader brings together over 40 key essays illustrating the full range of ideas embodied by the term. Authored by important critics, historians, and architects such as Kenneth Frampton, Lewis Mumford, Sigfried Giedion, and Alan Colquhoun, Architectural Regionalism represents the history of regionalist thinking in architecture from the early twentieth century to today.

Summary:
Born in 1944, Christian Hauvette, studied under the philosopher Roland Barthes before going on to train as an architect. Since 1980 he has headed his own office in Paris. Today, Hauvette is one of France’s leading architects. His architecture is characterised by a clear, constructive purpose which is at the same time highly expressive. Jean Prouvé’s theories are much in evidence in his work. This monograph provides an in-depth overview on the buildings and projects of the 90s, including the School of Waters and Forests in Clermont-Ferrand and his sensational headquarters of the Caisse Française de Développement in Paris, analysing the essential characteristics of Hauvette’s creativity.

This book is a history of the city and its community, brought to life by fifty-seven specially commissioned charcoal and ink drawings of Old Montreal by R.D. Wilson. Beginning with the establishment of the first permanent settlement in 1642, Eric McLean describes the changing range of structures that have evolved to make Montreal what it is today. This narrative is set alongside Wilson's depictions of Old Montreal's most beautiful and significant streets and buildings. The collaboration of artist and writer has produced a book to be treasured by anyone who knows or visits Montreal.
