Summary:
For centuries, architectural theory, discourse and agency have been based on diurnal and solar paradigms. References to night in Vitruvius’s De architectura are few, and the same absence is notable in Renaissance treatises by Alberti or Palladio. It was not until the 19th and 20th centuries that the invention and institutionalization of artificial light in private and public spaces gradually transformed conceptions of night in the architectural discipline. This volume offers the first attempt at a nocturnal history of architecture. What emerges from the studies is the thesis that the identity of human beings—across time and their domestic, professional and cultural spaces—is powerfully determined by the parameters of nighttime. By analyzing and studying "night scenes," this book reveals how the night is a laboratory for the development of new forms of conceptualizing space and, ultimately, of living.

Summary:
With more than 150 illustrations, this monograph offers the first in-depth look at the genesis of the Steiger House, a masterpiece of modern Swiss architecture, situated in the Doldertal in Zurich near other modernist houses, such as the Doldertal Houses by Roth and Breuer (1936) and the Fellowship Home (1960). Its central hall relates to Villa la Rotonda by Andrea Palladio. Detailed analyses illustrate the central layout and outline the chronology, typology and construction of the building. Further contributions illuminate its relation to local topography, the cultural context of the building, and important historical and contemporary architectural references, including the Steiger House's famous neighbors, the Doldertal Houses. The Swiss architect couple Flora Steiger-Crawford (1899–1991, also a sculptor) and Rudolf Steiger (1900–82) are important representatives of the Swiss avant-garde, and Flora Crawford was the first female architect to graduate from ETH Zurich.

Summary:
First published in 2006 (and now rare), and originally written as a dissertation in 1963, "The Formal Basis of Modern Architecture" is the acclaimed American architect Peter Eisenman's masterly formal analysis of architecture. "I wanted to write an analytic work that related what I had learned to see, from Palladio to Terragni, from Raphael to Guido Reni, into some theoretical construct that would bear on modern architecture, but from the point of view of a certain autonomy of form." Here, Eisenman—world famous for his Holocaust Memorial in Berlin (2005)—confronts historicism with theory and the analysis of form, illustrating his observations with numerous precisely executed drawings. "The Formal Basis of Modern Architecture" was Eisenman's dissertation at the University of Cambridge, and was first published as a facsimile edition by Lars Müller Publishers in 2006; that edition is now reprinted in a smaller format.

Summary:
Most houses are the product of multiple layers of norms and expectations built up over time, whether methods, materials, and technologies or social, cultural, economic, and political pressures. Yet at various moments houses have been built that break with the past and do something different—houses that stand outside of these expectations and instead are conceived to embody whole new theories or agendas. We call these "manifesto houses." For the first time, this compelling thread in the history of architecture is surveyed by Owen Hopkins. He brings together a collection of twenty-one such manifesto houses, exploring the visions for architecture conjured by Andrea Palladio, Eileen Gray, Frank Lloyd Wright, Harry Seidler, Lina Bo Bardi, Anupama Kundoo, and Sou Fujimoto, among others. "The manifesto house" looks in detail at the ideas and ambitions embodied in each house, the contexts that shaped them, and their impact and influence on the future of architecture.

Summary:
The first of a unique series of translations of Scamozzi's L'Idea della Architettura Universale. The northern Italian architect, Vincenzo Scamozzi, (1548-1616) designed a number of important palaces, villas and churches in and around Vicenza, Padua and Venice. In addition, he completed a comprehensive study of ancient classical architecture. including the possibilities for its application in a modern context. The first edition of the book was published in 1615. Scamozzi distinguishes himself from his predecessors Vitruvius and Palladio by the scientific approach he follows in his treatise, in which his own designs appear as examples. The clear and detailed account of the historical and geographical background to the principles of classical architecture led to the book's wide popularity in the Northern Netherlands throughout the 17th century. Scamozzi's text was regarded as the most suitable manual for mastering the rules of building, and his theories had a considerable impact upon classical architecture in the Dutch Golden Age.
