The uncertain state of Europe is the primary concern of Multiplicity : a multidisciplinary group of Europeans architects, photographers, urban developers and artists who met to explore and develop a series of studies focusing on contemporary European cities and their ongoing changes. The group uses on-site investigations, documented with beautiful photographs by Francesco Jodice and Gabriele Basilico, to illustrate the radical and dramatic changes occurring on European land and in its cities. Traditional spaces are slowly, yet forcefully, transforming due to the constant economic, political, and social upheavals and alterations. With an introduction by prominent political and intellectual figures such as Etienne Balibar, Rem Koolhas and Jeremy Rifkin, this volume analyses 24 cases of urban transformation. The cases cover geographical locations from Paris to Pristina, Helsinki to Bucharest, and show the extraordinary riches a modern city can offer while, at the same time, highlighting the abnormal spaces created by the existence of a so-called secondary world. Ernst Schwitters (1918-1996) began his career in photography in his teens, converting the family bathroom into a darkroom with the consent of his parents, Kurt and Helma Schwitters, at the age of 15 - by which time Ernst was already experimenting with photograms, following a visit from family friend Man Ray. His father encouraged him to undergo formal training in photography, but Ernst declined, preferring to teach himself, and by 1930 he was already participating in international exhibitions, having found his preferred subject matter in the landscapes of Norway and England. Having led the Schwitters family's migration from Nazi Germany to Norway, Ernst was to receive great acclaim there for both his landscape and architectural photography, and was also able to establish financial security through assignments for the Norwegian advertising agency SS-UNU-Foto. It is little known that Schwitters is one of color photography's pioneers: he began working with color film in 1943, and within two decades, he had created more than 10,000 slides, many of which have been digitally restored for this new volume. The only monograph on the photographer currently in print, the publication debuts Schwitters' vast oeuvre of color landscape photography, and also includes a fascinating account of the digital restoration process that allowed for their publication here.

Otto Neurath’s famous "Modern man in the making," first published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1939, captures and describes the state of the world in the 1930s by using text and figurative illustrations. From 1925 on, Neurath and his team had worked on a new visual language termed "Isotype" (International System of Typographic Picture Education). At a time that saw new mass media making hitherto unthinkable amounts of information available, Neurath felt the need for a systematic visualization explaining facts, statistical data and comparative numbers in simple ways. The book can be seen as one of the most influential predecessors of today’s infographics. In the visuals, each symbol and color represents a certain group of objects or people, often compared repetitively over a certain time span. The topics covered in the book include diverse social issues of the time like mortality, health, employment, trade, education, mobility, migration and demographics. "Modern man in the making" shows Neurath’s democratic endeavor to make knowledge intelligible and available to all. Composed of a series of animated maps generated by data, this immersive installation investigates human migrations today and their leading causes, including the impact of climate change. Ayesha Hameed considers the relationship between climate change and plantation economies, proposing a watery plantationocene that revolves around two islands: a former plantation in St. George's Parish in Barbados, and the port city of Port of Spain in Trinidad. It visits a marine research institute on a third island, Seili in Finland, to consider how notions of temporality and adaptation are produced in the climate emergency we face. Henriette Gunkel introduces the idea of time travel through notions of dizziness, freefall, and of being in vertigo as set out in Octavia Butler's novel Kindred and Kitso Lynn Lelliott's multimedia installation South Atlantic Hauntings, exploring what counts as technology, how it operates in relation to time, including deep space time, and how it interacts with the different types of bodies—human, machine, planetary, spectral, ancestral—that inhabit the terrestrial and extraterrestrial worlds.
