Summary:
The long period in-between demolition or renovation of a building site and the arrival of a new building can often impose a sad and somewhat ugly sight on a neighbourhood, however it can also offer possibilities to give a new and dynamic impulse. Hotel Transvaal, which lies in the neighbourhood of Transvaal, in The Hague, Netherlands, is such a source of inspiration. More than half of the social housing in this neighbourhood was demolished, however many of the finest rooms could be temporarily booked up until the moment of demolition. The interiors of the ‘hotel’ rooms were designed by artists and shop-owners from the neighbourhood. This book explores the development and realisation of the project.

Summary:
Through an examination of Surrealist photographs, objects, exhibitions, activities, and writings, the essays in Twilight Visions, the illustrated companion volume to the exhibition of the same name, portray the French capital as a city in the process of metamorphosis-in a kind of twilight state. The Bureau of Surrealist Research, the major Surrealist exhibitions, and the photographs of Paris by Brassai, Andre Kertesz, Ilse Bing, Germaine Krull, and Man Ray, among others, all reflect the tumultuous social and cultural transformations occurring in Paris in the 1920s and 30s. This volume considers the social, aesthetic, and political stances of the Surrealists as they probed hidden aspects of the commonplace and blurred the boundaries between dreams and reality, subjectivity and objectivity.

Summary:
This incisive look at the historical, social, and economic forces that have shaped China's modern architecture analyzes the country's struggle to define its own architectural aesthetics. Since the early 1980s, when China opened its doors to international trade and tourism, the country's economy has expanded at an incredible rate. Today, China is poised to be a testing ground for the world's most innovative designers and engineers. Layla Dawson's groundbreaking survey of architectural currents in China lays out not only the historical events that have brought the country to this unique position, but explores the challenges inherent in opening up the country to outside forces and ideas. She examines projects by Chinese and non-Chinese architects, including Zaha Hadid's Soho City masterplan, Rem Koolhaas's CCTV Headquarters, Norman Foster's Shanghai Tower and plans for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. As Dawson demonstrates how conflicting architectural philosophies are visible in China's newly rising skyline, she takes an unblinking look at the liabilities China faces by opening itself up to foreign influence.

Summary:
In The Invention of Art, Larry Shiner argues that the category of fine art is a modern invention, and that the line drawn between art and craft resulted from key social transformations in Europe during the eighteenth century. He looks at works by Hogarth, Rousseau, Woolstonecraft, Emerson, Marx, Dewey and Benjamin to show how the modern system maintains its dominance through the assimilation of artists and musicians who resist it, and the distinctions it draws between artists and artisans, and high art and the crafts.
