Summary:
The leading Russian propaganda artist Aleksandr Zhitomirsky (1907–1993) made photomontages that were airdropped on German troops during World War II. He later worked for Pravda and other leading publications, satirizing American politics and finance from the Truman through the Reagan eras and educating his public about Egypt, South Africa, Vietnam, and Nicaragua as well. Zhitomirsky favored the grotesque and the eye-catching. In this comprehensive account of Zhitomirsky’s long career, Erika Wolf explores his connections to and long friendship with the German artist John Heartfield, whose work inspired his own. Wolf also examines more than 100 of Zhitomirsky’s photomontages and translates excerpts from his one published book, "The Art of Political Photomontage: Advice for the Artist" (1983).

Summary:
Berlin, Brussels, Florence, London, Paris, Toronto, Zurich – fascinating western metropolises which are all sophisticated icons of international commerce, finance, tourism, though in very different ways. Striking appearances and successful structures are, however, only one side of the reality. On the darker side, there are the insidious changes which have come about primarily for reasons of quick profit and consumerism; social and ethnic ghettos are on the rise. Yet in all these cities there are forces which are facing up to these supposedly irreversible developments and which must be taken seriously. INURA – the International Network for Urban Research and Action – has published "Contested Metropolis" which looks at these seven cities by presenting important critical writings and alternative urban projects.

Summary:
Bearing witness to the changing economic landscape amid the Cold War, artists in the 1960s created works that critiqued, reshaped, and sometimes reinforced the spirit of capitalism. At a time when currency and finance were becoming ever more abstracted—and the art market increasingly an arena for speculation—artists on both sides of the Atlantic turned to economic themes, often grounded in a human context. ''The artist as economist'' examines artists who approached these issues in critical, imaginative, and humorous ways. Such examples, which author Sophie Cras insightfully situates within their historic economic context, reveal capitalism’s visual dimension. As art and economics grow more entangled, this volume offers a timely consideration of art’s capacity to reflect on and reimagine economic systems.

Summary:
Errant Journal No. 6 takes up the topic of debt in order to challenge the idea that it is something rational, natural or inevitable. The contributions in the issue address the ways in which debt and its language hold power over us and organize obedience; from its role in geopolitics to its associations with shame and guilt through moral and religious connotations. Together they reveal how the personal is always connected to the structural. Crucially, the issue also features contributions that address ways of thinking about debt outside Western/neoliberal hegemony and introduce instances of resistance to the violence and inequality inherent to debt. We’ve made additional space in this issue to address the intensified struggle for Palestinian liberation and its relations to debt/guilt and finance.
