Summary:
In 2019 it will be the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus. Prompted by this occasion, with "project bauhaus" ARCH+ has undertaken a critical appraisal of the Bauhaus ideas: working for several years, an international group of experts from a wide range of disciplines has investigated the socio-political relevance and emancipatory potential of the Bauhaus - historically, for today, and for the future. How can design still become effective as a political project? What are the possibilities and problems encountered by universal design in the age of globalization? Can the emancipatory potential of technology still be activated in a digitalized world? The answers to these questions are published here for the first time for an international readership.

Summary:
This book critically investigates our contemporary time crisis. The transformation of society from an agrarian to an industrial, and finally an urbanized way of living and working has created a fundamental change in our understanding of time: a 24/7 mentality. The move from natural time to the digital age leads to a fragmentation of time that deeply affects our daily biological and social rhythm. We need a new approach to time to overcome our temporal system of clocks and calendars. This book investigates a new perception of time by exploring the concept of uchronia, a term derived from the Greek u-topos and meaning 'no time' or 'non-time'. Uchronia is a way of questioning, speculating on and designing new kinds of temporal systems that are more about being in tune than on time.

Summary:
Designing gardens, parks and landscapes requires a holistic approach. It also requires extensive specialist knowledge. In courses and manuals the generalist or in-depth levels are frequently under-represented, or the attempted comprehensive view becomes too complex. "Landscape for Architects" now offers a fundamental reference work which is as comprehensive as it is practical and as holistic as it is detailed. Created in cooperation with the Architecture Department of Braunschweig Technical University, Landscape for Architects addresses the aspects of landscape architecture: "questions" are raised with abstract schematic drawings, and possible 'answers' are illustrated with analytical drawings of case studies from the 20th and 21st centuries in order to inspire the reader's own creativity and to support the design process.

Summary:
Three hundred years ago, intellectuals of the European Enlightenment constructed a mythology of technology. Influenced by a confluence of humanism, colonialism, and racism, this mythology ignored local wisdom and indigenous innovation, deeming it primitive. Today, we have slowly come to realize that the legacy of this mythology is haunting us. Designers understand the urgency of reducing humanity’s negative environmental impact, yet perpetuate the same mythology of technology that relies on exploiting nature. Responding to climate change by building hard infrastructures and favoring high-tech homogenous design, we are ignoring millennia-old knowledge of how to live in symbiosis with nature. Without implementing soft systems that use biodiversity as a building block, designs remain inherently unsustainable. Lo-TEK, derived from Traditional Ecological Knowledge, is a cumulative body of multigenerational knowledge, practices, and beliefs, countering the idea that indigenous innovation is primitive and exists isolated from technology. It is sophisticated and designed to sustainably work with complex ecosystems.
