Richard Murphy is a multi award-winning architect. The materials he employs vary from stone (rubble, smooth ashlar or rusticated), with carefully assembled steel sections that form the structure, stairs and handrails, corrugated iron or planted roofing, dressed lead flashing, etched glass blocks, mirrors, with timber and coloured and polished plaster as warm interior finishes. All the materials are used with great precision, clarity as well as ambiguity. He is well known as an architect who has been influenced by the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa (about whom he has written the definitive analysis of his most important work, the Castelvecchio Museum in Verona), but Murphy’s architecture is never a pastiche of Scarpa, and frequently echoes and develops other influences such as Glenn Murcutt, Frank Lloyd Wright or Richard MacCormac, for whom he worked.

In 1949 the construction of the Sexto Panteón, an underground necropolis containing 150,000 burial plots, was launched. This monumental brutalist-style cemetery is the first and largest experimentation of modern architecture applied to the funerary field, and yet it remains relatively unknown. Ítala Fulvia Villa (1913–1991), the project’s architect, was one of Argentina’s first female architects and urban planners, a pioneer of South American modernism who also contributed to Le Corbusier’s master plan for Buenos Aires. In this book, French architect Léa Namer rediscovers the necropolis through an in-depth investigation and feminist re-reading of this unique site and its creator.

Summary:
Sea gardens have been created by First Peoples on the Northwest coast for more than three thousand years. These gardens consist of stone reefs that are constructed at the lowest tide line, encouraging the growth of clams and other marine life on the gently sloped beach. This lyrical story follows a young child and an older family member who set out to visit a sea garden early one morning, as the lowest tides often occur at dawn. After anchoring their boat, they explore the beach, discover the many sea creatures that live there, hear the sputtering of clams and look closely at the reef. They reflect on the people who built the wall long ago, as well as those who have maintained it over the years. After digging for clams, they tidy up the beach, then return home.

Summary:
A bedroom, a kitchen, a bathroom - are these rooms all that make a home? Not at all, argues Emanuele Coccia. The buildings we inhabit are of immense psychological and cultural significance. They play a decisive role in human flourishing and, for hundreds of years, their walls and walkways, windows and doorways have guided our relationships with others and with ourselves. They reflect and reinforce social inequalities; they allow us to celebrate and cherish those we love. They are the places of return that allow us to venture out into the world. In this intimate, elegantly argued account, Coccia shows how the architecture of home has shaped, and continues to shape, our psyches and our societies, before then masterfully leading us towards a more creative, ecological way of dwelling in the world.

Summary:
The iconic architecture of the brutalist modernist megastructure of Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada built by architect Arthur Erickson in the 1960s is the site of the artistic research project into the history of this "radical campus" and its built environment by Vancouver and Vienna based artists Sabine Bitter and Helmut Weber. The collaborative research group, "Guests and Hosts", formed by Bitter & Weber and Métis scholar June Scudeler including Métis scholar and student Treena Chambers, Kanien’kehá:ka Mohawk student Toni-Leah Yake, as well as Rachel Warwick and Hannah Campbell, has challenged the narrative of the radical campus, so called because it was informed by experimental concepts of learning and teaching. Using the spaces of a settler colonial institution, the project shifts perspectives by unsettling and challenging western- based concepts of pedagogy and knowledge. Combining archival photographic material, architectural photographs by the artists, and interventions into the institutional spaces by Guests and Hosts, the project performs the claim for places rather than spaces for Indigenous ways of knowing and learning.

However, it takes skill to combine them in order to avoid tension and clashes, and ensure maximum readability of the text in the design. From font weights to classifications, each font has its own distinct personality, and should be carefully paired to convey the right tone and mood of the design. Featuring a selection of type specimens and their design applications, ''Sans In Use'' collates the best combinations of the two typeface categories and serves as a reference point for inspiration-seeking designers and typographers.
